🏳️🌈 Happy #PrideMonth, y'all! 🏳️🌈 This month is about celebrating love (because love is love ❤️, and don't cha love it? 🤗), but it's also about spreading awareness about the hardships and challenges LGBTQ+ communities face. Let's take a moment to talk about #mentalhealth. LGBTQ+ people experience high rates of mental health challenges. Personal, family and social acceptance of sexual orientation and gender identity greatly affects their mental health and personal safety, and discrimination has been associated with high rates of psychiatric disorders, substance use disorder and suicide. And when it comes to getting care, it's not always easy peasy, as stigma, lack of cultural sensitivity, and unconscious and conscious reluctance to address sexuality may hamper effectiveness. As an industry, let's do our part to drop the stigma, discrimination and bias in all its forms by working together to close the gaps in receiving proper care. 💜 #behavioralhealth #healthequity #mentalhealthmatters

Societal stigmas causing deliberating conditions, Mental health awareness and support are crucial. 🌍 Global Perspective: While we've seen progress, many countries still criminalize LGBTQ+ identities. The link between LGBTQ+ individuals and eating disorders is complex and multifaceted. Recognising eating disorders in LGBTQ+ individuals requires awareness of the unique factors that may contribute to their development and presentation. LGBTQ+ individuals often face minority stress, including discrimination, prejudice, and stigma related to their sexual orientation or gender identity. This chronic stress can lead to psychological distress, low self-esteem, and body dissatisfaction, which are risk factors for eating disorders. LGBTQ+ individuals may have a history of trauma, including experiences of discrimination, bullying, or rejection, which can contribute to the development of eating disorders as a coping mechanism. Healthcare providers should be aware of the unique experiences and needs of LGBTQ+ individuals when assessing for eating disorders, including the importance of using inclusive language and providing affirming care. It's essential to approach individuals with sensitivity and compassion, creating a safe and supportive environment where they feel comfortable seeking help and receiving appropriate care for their eating disorder. #eatingdisorders #LGBTQ+

Autism and LGBTQ+: What are the challenges? (Continued) What challenges do autistic people who are LGBTQ+ face? Family acceptance Autistic people who are LGBTQ+ can struggle to find understanding within their own families and communities, leading to isolation and even rejection. Navigating relationships People with ASD often encounter difficulties in interpreting social cues and norms. Dating often relies on subtle forms of communication, non-verbal cues, and social expectations that can be difficult to decipher. Awareness within the community While the LGBTQ+ communities are generally accepting and supportive, there can still be limited awareness of ASD. Additionally, some LGBTQ+ events, such as Pride, may not be suitable for some people with ASD, especially those with sensory sensitivities or communication issues. A sense of self Autistic people who are LGBTQ+ may experience a sense of confusion or uncertainty about their own identities, as they navigate both their autism and their sexual or gender orientations. This internal struggle can lead to feelings of frustration and being misunderstood. Mental Health Issues Stereotypes and misconceptions about both autism and LGBTQ+ identities can lead to misunderstandings and prejudice. The combination of discrimination and internal struggles can equate to higher rates of anxiety, depression, and self-esteem issues often found in both autistic and LGBTQ+ communities. #share #autism #autismawareness

Excited to share that our research paper, 𝐒𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐆𝐁𝐓𝐐+ 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚: 𝐀 𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬-𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲 has been published in the Journal of Preventive Medicine Research & Reviews Wolters Kluwer Medknow. Mental health issues are emerging as a potential pandemic, and our study explores the multifaceted nature of suicide within the LGBTQ+ community, addressing disparities in health outcomes. In India, mental health conditions face stigma, particularly impacting the LGBTQ+ population. Despite facing discrimination, bias, and various challenges, their mental health often goes overlooked. Our findings highlight the prevalence of suicide ideation, especially among LGBTQ+ individuals in India, shedding light on the urgent need for suicide prevention measures. Grateful for the mentors Dr. Shazina Saeed Dr Mohd Shannawaz who guided us in navigating this crucial research. Let's break the silence surrounding LGBTQ+ mental health, challenge stigma, and advocate for inclusive policies. 📊🧠 Arunima Koul Dr. Kanika Arora #research #LGBTQ+ #MentalHealth #researchpaper #SuicidePrevention #inclusivehealthcare

As we approach Pride Month, it's essential to highlight the mental health and substance use challenges that disproportionately impact the LGBTQ+ communities. According to Mental Health America, among U.S. adults, 4.5 percent identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. Of those 39% reported having a mental illness in the last year. The bisexual and transgender communities have the highest rates of mental health concerns within the LGBTQ+ population. Younger members of the LGBTQ+ community struggle the most with mental health concerns of all the age groups. LGBTQ+ people are at higher risk for experiencing shame, fear, discrimination, and adverse and traumatic events. These stressors can cause a higher prevalence of substance use and mental health issues. Often stigma, lack of cultural sensitivity, and unconscious and conscious reluctance to address sexuality may hamper effectiveness of care. Approximately 8 percent of LGBTQ+ individuals and nearly 27 percent of transgender individuals report being denied needed health care outright. At Overcome, we celebrate LGBTQ+ communities with a reminder: You belong. You matter. Your mental health matters. And you are not alone. This Pride Month, we're celebrating the beautiful diversity of the LGBTQ+ community. While acceptance is growing, there's a critical need for more research on mental health within this vibrant population. Why is this important? • Many mental health resources don't accurately reflect the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals. • Discrimination, homophobia, and prejudice create significant barriers to accessing and trusting support services. • Studies shows the LGBTQ+ community experiences higher rates of depression, anxiety, and unmet healthcare needs. We stand with the LGBTQ+ community by: • Creating a safe and inclusive space for open communication. • Providing access to mental health professionals who understand the specific needs of LGBTQ+ individuals. • Building a supportive community where everyone feels welcome to share their experiences. Join us in creating a world where everyone can access the mental health support they deserve. Let's break down barriers and prioritize mental well-being for all! #lgbtq #lgbtqmentalhealth #mentalhealthawarness #psychologistsonlinkedin #psychologist #psychology #psychstats #lgbtqpride #pridemonth #supporteachother #healthcareneed #educateyourself #lgbtqcommunity #beproud #theconfessionboxx

Sandplay therapy has roots in Jungian psychology, which observes the anima (the internal feminine within the masculine) and the animus (the internal masculine within the feminine). Complimentary imagery like Yin and Yang, sun and moon, fire and water can be useful to convey this balance, and yes, one can make their own miniature Drag Kings and Drag Queens with a touch of paint and some doll dresses. However, since it can be difficult to find LGBTQ+ representation when shopping for miniatures, let’s explore some recurring themes in LGBTQ+ mental health, and how sandplay therapists can diversify their collection. #LGBTQSandplay #Sandplay #SandplayTherapy #PlayTherapy #LGBTQMentalHealth #QueerCounseling #QueerCounselor #QueerTherapy #LGBTQTherapist #LGBTQTherapists https://lnkd.in/gNDuvE38
