I was talking to some folks recently about their employer provided healthcare and noticed a trend lately. Is it just me or is it getting worse and worse? Employers are having the employees cover significant amounts of the premiums more often now than not. I hear it costing close to $500 per pay period to cover a family. Then to top it off, most of these plans are really high deductibles that basically don't do much for you until you spend $10,000 first. Folks, do you realize that is like saying you have to spend $24,000 before having your insurance actually really being effective for you? Think about that for a minute! Being a recent hire, I realized how amazing our insurance is and how little I have to pay for it compared to what most others in our industry are dealing with. I highly suggest folks start paying attention to that when deciding what salary they want when negotiating. Sounds great when a company offers you $8000 more a year than another but if the company offering you $8000 less saves you $15000 a year on your medical, that matters. Your salary might be $8000 lower but you're actually pocketing more money every year. I never really considered that.
