On Juneteenth, New Seasons Market honors food traditions that reflect the rich and diverse heritage of our communities. As such, we asked local executive chef Kiara Hardy, owner of Kitchen Killa Culinary Solutions, to chime in. For her family, it's all about the black-eyed peas and rice. She also points out that the dishes people choose to make are "as geographically diverse as our culture." As a native South Floridian, Kiara comes from a state where "Juneteenth's relevance is minimized, if not ignored," so she supports the 2021 establishment of a federal holiday. "What is important, in my opinion, is that we do not permit these types of acknowledgments or validations to inform the processes through which our culture shares and preserves our treasures." Kiara also gives back to Portland's Black food community as a developer of the POIC + RAHS Chef Academy. "We offer paid training for individuals, including Black and Brown underserved young adults, to develop skills that would make them assets in a professional kitchen." #Juneteenth #CulinaryExcellence #DiversityInFood #FoodHistory #LeadersInDiversity #BlackCulinaryTraditions
Wholeheartedly agree! I hope the PNW community starts doing more remember this date and steps up to help more and more young people in the community learn what a joy it is to grow, create and enjoy food.
