I often get asked “Mark Sims , why do you wake up so early and so consistently?” The easy answer, is that when you found a facility services business like Fikes, getting an early start is the optimal approach and the right example needed to lead😁. However, there are many out there who don’t work in industries that require earlier wake ups but they still refuse to hit the snooze and are committed to the many benefits gained daily from being an early bird! In turn, I also know there are plenty of professionals who aspire to waking up earlier and they’re just not sure how to start. Gumption? What's that? The topic for today's "Winning Secret" excerpt: "When I was a little boy, I distinctly remember a children’s book entitled, The Little Engine That Could. A little red engine breaks down on its way to deliver food and toys to the children on the other side of a big mountain. The clown riding on the train flags down one engine after another: the shiny yellow passenger train, the big black freight train, and the rusty old locomotive. All of them decline to help. Then a little blue engine, that switches train cars in the yard, happens by. Willing to help but unsure due to her size, she agrees to try. As she strains to pull the cars up and over the big mountain, she repeats to herself the mantra, 'I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.' That’s gumption—taking on a task that appears too big to handle and pulling it off with determination. The big freight train and the shiny yellow passenger train were more than capable but didn’t want to be bothered. The old rusty engine didn’t have the heart to take on the task. But the little blue engine wanted to help and gave it her all. And the children on the other side of the mountain enjoyed their much-needed food and beloved toys. Don’t be intimidated by the big freight trains in life. These people come off as powerful, busy, and productive. In reality, they’re often posing, using social media or self-promotion to project an illusion, a false reality only meant to serve themselves. Don’t be disheartened by those who have given up, who no longer try to achieve their potential.
