While much attention in this case will be focused on the Law Enforcement response or lack there of. This is another situation that points clearly to the fact that Violence is a Process that starts with in many cases known behavior before the tragedy. A new study led by Cassandra Crifasi, assistant professor and co-director of the Center for Gun Violence Solutions at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, found that compared to white counterparts, individuals who identify as Black had significantly higher support for several gun violence prevention polices. These include: 1) pairing officers with trained mental health professionals; 2) diverting individuals with mental health symptoms into care rather than arresting them, and 3) redirecting police funding to social services for those at risk of gun violence. Many survivors of gun violence are unexpectedly thrown into a world of recovery, grief, and unanticipated expenses. The Illinois Crime Victim Compensation Program uses state and federal funding to reimburse victims of violent crime and their families. But in 2021, an investigation by The Trace found that the program struggled to reach survivors, approve applicants, and reimburse them quickly. The following year, a criminal justice reform bill broadened the rules of who can apply, increased the total possible reimbursement from $27,000 to $45,000 per person, and extended the application deadline from two to five years after a crime. Perhaps this is too obvious for some, but Americans are being murdered and injured in violent crimes. What happened over the July 4th weekend is a sad and preventable tragedy. https://lnkd.in/gephwd2w And two things, as follows, are common in our nation's most violent cities like Chicago, NYC, Washington DC and Detroit: 1) 'Tough' gun laws that do nothing to stop criminals while keeping law-abiding citizens from defending themselves, their loved ones and their homes/cities. 2) Elected officials and officials (almost exclusively Democrats) who enact 'no bail, catch and release' programs for criminals while defunding, criticizing and restraining law enforcement. In my next comment below is the truth about just one city and its current Mayor who - prior to just recently - advocated for de-funding and restraining local law enforcement. That city continues to be one of the nation's most dangerous cities. HERE'S MY POINT. One Party has advocated for lawlessness, while another Party has advocated for the rule of law. The results are obvious. This issue has nothing to do with race or gender, and everything to do with common sense, civic duty and the Constitution. Safe communities are good for everyone. At our latest book club meeting, we delved into this article, published earlier this year by The New York Times, about addressing gun violence in Baton Rouge. Community members, the chief of police, and the mayor’s office are working together to replicate the Newark method, a community-based violence prevention effort credited with significantly decreasing crime in Newark, New Jersey.   🔍 The Challenge: Federal funding has traditionally favored law enforcement efforts over community-based programs. This funding gap creates a seemingly impenetrable cycle where "proven programs" continue to receive support while emerging initiatives struggle to secure the necessary resources to establish their effectiveness.   📊 The Solution: Communities in Baton Rouge and Newark are tackling this challenge by prioritizing data collection. In Newark, this included partnering with the UCLA Social Justice Research Partnership to conduct a narrative evaluation* of the Newark Street Team. When we have violent crime we often hear about the rights of the accused. While that is important one area that is often overlooked in the process is "what about the rights for the families of the victim"? There are many organizations helping in that area as shown with the agencies involved but I want to focus on the New Mexico Victims Rights Project. Here is an organization designed to help families affected by violent crime to understand their rights under the law and guide them through the process. Nobody should have to deal with this situation but having a group with expert knowledge of how to navigate the process is critical in making sure all parties are represented. Led by Executive Director and Founder Linda Atkinson, here is a group that helps people during a most difficult period. #violentcrime #crime #victimsrights #victim
