"...when students think everything is a lie, they also think there is no point in engaging with difficult topics," (Melinda Wenner Moyer, 2022). The way we engage folks with #informationliteracy must be married to #emotionalliteracy. The research is pretty clear that we can't fact-check our way out of conspiratorial thinking, and we can't simply espouse the values of journalism (see link in comments for more on why). One of the strategies I think (and researchers support) is a desperate need to model intellectual humility. Put simply: we need to tell the story of how our minds change, and when we've reformed a new opinion. An approach to engaging that strategy I've experimented with a lot this year is the 'The Flavor Journey of An Opinion' frame shown below. To expand on that idea here's how I break it down into narrative steps: 👟 One: talk about how I go online or to the news 'shopping for an opinion I already have.' 👟 Two: From there I reflect or I do some lateral reading to dig deeper. 👟 Three: Think about the reality that I've not yet processed fully how that text was designed to evoke an emotional response. Much in the same way my opinion of a flavor has micro-moments of shifting, so too is it important to try and slow down the consumption of what is in our 'feed' too really understand the ingredients at play.

I am so excited! Today was a session with all cross-border coordinators to talk about... exactly: coordinating cross-border projects! We talked about the role, how it is becoming more and more accepted in journalism. We discussed the name of the role: Coordinator? Manager? Producer? We talked about what challenges we face, how we solve them and how difficult it is to find a standard, because every project and every team is different. We have already learnt so much from each other in that hour and a half, what would it be like to do that regularly? How can we continue to learn from each other, discuss and grow in this whole new role within journalism even after this conference? I can't stop thinking about this article by Ed Yong . It's not that Ed has me thinking about Covid in a new way. I mean, sure, that. But Ed is the most indefatigably curious science writer I know of—someone who has always struck me as highly empathetic and capable of recognizing when his assumptions might be getting in the way of the real story. If even he, at this stage in his career, is recognizing how much his biases have held him back, there's a lesson here for everyone. Listening isn't simply about not talking; it's also about: •Quieting your inner dialogue, •Resisting the instinct to frame a person's answers in terms of your own narrative, •Knowing that asking followup questions is almost always better than moving to the next question on your list, •And knowing that the best followup question is almost always "Why?" #uxresearch #empathy #customerinsights #userresearch

But if you’ve worked on it and can talk about the broad issue, don’t be afraid to do the interview. 📚Frame the big picture: Journalists will probably ask you why X or Y is important in context of current news or policy. Help the reader or listener place the research in context. Use plain language. Get excited! 📚You can ask us questions, too: Reputable journalists should identify their outlet, story topic, deadline and editorial process. If any of those things are unclear, ask! And feel free to ask questions about when the story will publish, etc.

The narrative details the unexpectedly humane treatment Lifshitz received during her captivity, which isn’t hinted at in the title. 🤔 Why is this noteworthy? Titles play a significant role in setting reader expectations. In this instance, there's a clear discrepancy between the emotional weight of the title and the article’s more balanced depiction. As consumers of news, it's a reminder to delve beyond headlines and titles to truly understand the essence of a story. Integrating ethical considerations into data journalism practices is essential for upholding the profession’s integrity and relevance in today’s data-driven landscape. This will help to produce impactful stories that inform, educate, and inspire action.

I can not *not* post this here, of course. A whole chapter from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism annual Digital News Report, launched yesterday, is dedicated to my favourite subject in media - ‘user needs' topic. 10+ charts and graphs, a truly global outlook (40+ countries surveyed!) and lots of actionable data on one of the main trends in the publishing industry. Who would have thought that in 2016-2017, when Santanu Chakrabarti and Andy Jones from BBC World Service Audiences team brought what now can be safely called a *seminal* report to me, and the rest is history. 7-8 years from a research idea to a whole chapter in a global report (with a vital role played towards the end of this period by smartocto, Rutger Verhoeven and Erik Van Heeswijk!) - hats off to you, dear colleagues. Thank you, Rasmus Kleis Nielsen and Nic Newman for deciding to include this chapter in your report, and thank you, Richard Fletcher, for writing it. The link to this chapter is in the first comment.

Being a reporter is a task that keeps the students on their toes, with all their senses alert. The reporting team of the press project has covered a wide array of topics to culminate the the ideas of the world around us. Keeping an eye out for newsworthy events and articulating the facts to their best level exceptionally distinguishes the reporting team of BAJE. Be it early in the morning, or after a wary college day; be it the exhausting Bengaluru traffic or the scarcity of reliable sources in the early stages of reporting; their ‘nose for news’ has helped the team curate articles that will keep the readers consistently engaged. Overlooking all the challenges and shortcomings they faced, their zeal and efficiency to make the project a success is truly promising and reflects upon their immense calibre.
