The TV drama I hated at first but grew to love. It's won the award for best TV drama series at the Golden Globes. Usually I'm a sucker for unlikable characters; the more flaws and sass the better. But Ep 1 of Succession didn't chime with me. Wasn't interested in watching a bunch of rich privileged brats cavorting about in private planes and chauffeur-driven vehicles throwing hissy fits. Modelled on the Murdochs of this world, the show, at a surface level, made me roll my eyeballs and think: yeah, nah. But that was before I got what the show was really about. That's when I fell in love with the series. I came late to it, but soon devoured all four seasons. It's all in the premise. When I understood the core concept that made the show tick, I was hooked. The Roy siblings have it all. Except their father's love (their mother's also a piece of work). They will do anything to get their father's attention, admiration. I think there's a sizeable chunk of the population who can relate to that. Not the money bit. The parental affection bit. Boom. We get it. It's tapping into a universal theme. The audience is on board and engaged. If anything, the fact that these people are a bunch of sh*ts only adds to the appeal. Why? We understand why they are so dysfunctional! We can empathize with the characters and their actions even though they are reprehensible on so many levels. Proving that protagonists do NOT need to be likeable to make a great show. TV Show Recommendation: Succession (2018)   Succession planning for an empire or a conglomerate is never an easy task. Especially when there are multiple contenders for the top job and all of them are the children of the patriarch or the matriarch.   But this show is not only about running and handing over an empire. This show also highlights the inner workings of a media outlet, the dark realities of the top management, and how profit is always a priority over producing thoughtful content for the public.   Loosely based on Rupert Murdoch and Fox News, this show does an exceptional job displaying a trust-deficient between the patriarch, Logan Roy, and the heir apparent, Kendall Roy.   Succession also highlights the political divisions arising from the social and electoral point of view which leads to media biases in the newsrooms. David Chase, the acclaimed writer of the golden age of television, recently expressed his belief that this era has come to an end. At 78, he finds himself being advised to simplify “dumb down” his productions, and avoid creating content that demands audience concentration. It seems we are reverting to the past, Chase observes. While I hope this isn’t entirely accurate, I’ve noticed indications that support his claim. Take the new season of #Reacher for instance. I was disappointed with the first season, and to my dismay, the second season has deteriorated further. Despite being the target demographic for this genre, I find myself unable to invest time in ‘Reacher’ due to its poor quality. The initial episodes of the second season reminded me of the past - subpar writing and stupidity. I sincerely hope this isn’t indicative of the future of television. Perhaps the fatigue from superhero movies will signal to executives that audiences are growing weary of simplistic narratives. If the aim is to produce content that doesn’t necessitate audience engagement, then ‘Reacher’ is a prime example of this approach. Interestingly, the first few episodes have received high viewership scores on Nielsen. However, I’m hopeful that these ratings will plummet once the updated viewership data is released. I anticipate that viewers like myself, initially drawn to the show, will quickly lose interest due to its lackluster content. What can a British TV show teach us about Diversity and Inclusion? One of my all-time favorite TV programs is the long-running BBC comedy panel show, Would I Lie To You (or WILTY to its fans). In it, two teams compete to determine whether the personal stories shared by the other are True or False. The show sparkles with the lightning wit of its co-hosts and guests. My obsession with it is a constant headache and mystery to my family. Over its 17+ seasons many guests on WILTY aren’t those you normally expect to see on a visual medium like TV. The show has featured guests that are blind, have cerebral palsy, or other hereditary/genetic conditions. Yet these guests are as hilarious as any other (the quirky and self-deprecating Chris McCausland is a personal favorite), and freely poke fun at themselves. They aren’t invited for the differences in their appearance or physical abilities, but the diversity and quality of their humor often borne out of their life experiences. On a top-notch comedy show, the requirement to make people laugh supersedes every other ability. A performer's physical conditions no longer matter, only the quality of their jokes do. And the show is richer for it. A world class comic is after all a world class comic. In an ideal world, we also wouldn’t judge (or hire) people based on their appearance or other superficial characteristics, but instead on their ability to do the required job well. Surprisingly, while I think WILTY has done a great job, the BBC overall appears to be falling short of its own diversity goals. Links to that article are in the comments below. Why do you keep rewatching your favorite tv show? 📺 It’s actually all about storytelling and comfort. Familiar stories breed comfort. In fact, this is very similar to why bedtime stories are so popular - worlds that are different from our own sometimes provide a little extra emotional cushioning. And in the case of going back to particular stories, it’s often your mind’s way of finding calm ground. Many college kids in fact will have a rerun of their favorite tv shows playing in the background while they complete intense academic essays. And of course, if you’re already familiar with the characters, this can also help you feel socially connected in a way. Last week Super Bowl wasn’t the only hot TV show in town. At Comedy Central, the iconic Daily Show premiered the return of Jon Stewart, the host that led it to become one of the most watched and followed shows on American television. The Daily Show's unique way of telling the news, mixing comedy and satire with real, well-structured and researched analysis, grabbed the attention of audiences across the US and became one of the most watched daily telecasts in the country. With the upcoming Presidential election looming, Jon Stewart is once again at the helm of the show, even if only hosting the Monday show. Last week marked the return of Stewart at the desk and it started the new season of the Daily Show with a bang. Not only did the show get an audience rating of 1.9 million viewers across all broadcasts - the show’s biggest audience in the last 5 years (source: https://lnkd.in/d9CdA3Ky), but it also brought a highly engaged audience. With an Emotional Impact Score (EIS) of 614, last Monday's Daily Show was 14% more engaging than Mediaprobe’s benchmark for all US TV telecasts. Jon Stewart’s opening analysis of the news got an EIS of 689, which was 20% higher than the rest of the show, and 36% above the benchmark for US television. The moment when Stewart went from cheering President Biden’s leaving his press conference to mock despair as the President returned to address more questions, to ill fortune, was the highest peak of engagement of the show with a score of 1,287 EIS.
