US #elections are coming up, and #voting behaviour and #political alignment is shaking up the race to the White House. One of the voices impacting voter #behaviour is Candace Owens, an American #conservative political commentator. In my report for Canvas8, I explore why this controversial figure appeals to many young Americans. I also interviewed political journalist and an extremism reporter Will Fritz, who explained: “The American public does really like people who are taking down the system because confidence in American institutions has been on a downward trajectory. All you really have to do is be vaguely anti-establishment and people will think it’s cool." Additionally, I included quotes from my colleague Gabriela Serpa Royo who explained the reason for the rise of the #tradwife movement to SCREENSHOT Media: “Gen Z is grappling with the complexities of the world—caught between youthful exploration and the harsh realities of a society in crisis [...] There's a certain allure in looking back to a time when, even if not directly involved in homemaking, society ‘seemed’ to function more smoothly.” I'd also like to give a shout out to Tom M. The Conservative Party logo has always been an enigma to me. Clearly it was an attempt to rebrand and soften their image after years of being trounced by Labour in opposition. Trying to rid themselves of the 'Nasty Party' tag. The choice of an oak signifying of Englishness was understandable. Stolidity, doughtiness, strength, a softer sense of tradition and with some vague environmental connotations and a less crusading jingoistic brand image than that represented by the previous emblem of the freedom torch. Nice touch in the context by then leader, PR man and later #Brexit fall guy, David Cameron. Fair play. The Labour Party in the 90s also assiduously massaged their image to effect a shift from a party run by Trade Unions (symbolised by the Red flag) and Socialist bloc to become an electable social democratic party. They moved to a patriotic Lancastrian red rose of England.  What bothered me about the Tory logo however was the smudged nature of the oak and as Conservatism in power descended into the very horrible, toxic mess we’ve lived through the last 14 years this logo has represented the Tory party semiotically through what is a (maybe deliberate) weaselly kind of strategic vagueness. One Nation Conservatism, Neo-Victorian Thatcherism, Atlanticism, regressive modernisation, compassionate conservatism and then later the unconvincing bromide of Big Society. All these seems to have been somehow nicely encompassed within this semiotic smudge. In what Stuart Hall in the late 70s called the 'great moving to the right show' they gambled big, with Brexit and then later with Windrush and Rwanda policy: scapegoating, smearing, scaremongering, and pandering to xenophobic instincts in order to get that right wing vote. Well it turns out it didn't quite work. And let's not go into their cynical use of black and brown people as human shields and alibis that offer them plausible deniability for racism. A topic, perhaps for another day. Another smokescreen. But after last night, the polysemously diffuse nature of the Conservative party logo has morphed into something else. I remember when I was at school using a rubber to get rid of a mistake. Something I regretted and that I no longer wanted to see. It has now revealed itself as a self-erasure. This iteration of the Tory party has reached its semiotic destiny and rubbed itself out. The trouble is in the UK what may emerge from this erasure is a passing of their political torch to Nigel Farage & Reform UK! Anyway, well done Labour. White people's work is to engage white people in the struggle for justice. We must put it all on the line too over the next 105 days to ensure VP Harris wins decisively in all 50 states and most importantly in the swing states that will decide this election. As Steve Phillips consistently reminds us, the new American majority- voters of color + progressive whites- make up the majority of the electorate. We sent President Obama to the White House twice. In 2016 HRC won the popular vote by 2.9 million votes. 45 never won the popular vote, he won the Electoral College by 80,000 votes in three states: Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. Since then, the new American majority has grown, and the MAGA cult has shrunk. Progressive white people collecting our cousins is the path to a decisive White House victory, taking back the House, keeping and expanding the Senate majority, and expanding the Supreme Court so we can pass laws that benefit ALL the people and not just the 1% and major corporations. Practitioners and researchers have studied the most effective way for white people to collect our cousins (spoiler alert- it's not calling them stupid, or avoiding the topic of racism), and Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ), "a home for white people working for justice" https://surj.org/ knows all the best ways, has been doing this work since 2009, and has many ways for us to do this work, both from home and in person. "The MAGA movement is driven primarily by white racism and white identity politics. The ultimate goal is protecting and expanding white privilege and white power for white people. Moreover, as shown by public opinion and other research, a large percentage if not outright majority of these White Americans support ending democracy and replacing it with some form of authoritarianism — if white people are no longer the most powerful group in the country. In 1872, Susan B. Anthony made history by casting a ballot in the presidential election, a bold act of civil disobedience that thrust her into the center of the suffrage movement’s struggle for women’s rights. However, her action didn’t go unnoticed by the authorities, leading to her arrest and subsequent trial. Anthony’s trial took place in a tumultuous era marked by fervent debates over the role of women in society. Charged with unlawfully voting “without having a lawful right to vote,” Anthony faced a formidable legal battle. Her defense argued that the Fourteenth Amendment’s equal protection clause implicitly granted women the right to vote, a daring assertion that challenged the prevailing norms of the time. Despite Anthony’s impassioned plea for justice, the trial was marred by bias and prejudice. The presiding judge, Ward Hunt, instructed the jury to deliver a guilty verdict without allowing them to deliberate. In a move that underscored the systemic discrimination against women, Judge Hunt denied Anthony the opportunity to testify on her behalf. The trial’s outcome was a foregone conclusion, with Anthony found guilty and fined $100 — a sum she defiantly refused to pay. Rather than accepting defeat, Anthony used the trial as a platform to amplify the suffrage movement’s message. She famously declared: “I shall never pay a dollar of your unjust penalty,” signaling her unwavering commitment to the cause. Anthony’s trial served as a rallying cry for women across the nation. Her unwavering resolve in the face of adversity inspired countless others to join the fight for equality. Although she never lived to see the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment, which granted women the right to vote in 1920, Anthony’s legacy endures as a testament to the power of perseverance and activism.
