I saw an ad for 805 Brewing Company that caught my attention. It’s more of a music video than a product commercial, featuring Jade Jackson covering Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land.” https://lnkd.in/gn5nbuyz It resonated with me because: 1) I love classic song covers. 2) At Freeform, we did a cover of "This Land Is Your Land" with Milck for our series “Motherland: Fort Salem.” The show reimagined the Salem Witch Trials with witches as the USA's military, examining nationalism, gender roles, and patriotism. Its dual nature as both a patriotic and protest song made it perfect for a show that questioned duty, honor, and patriotism. 805 Brewing Company's ad is an emotional homage to America, promising that a good beer can bring people together. It’s a lovely sentiment, demonstrating the power of a brand message over a transactional product ad. This ad by 805 Brewing is a gift to the consumer, designed to evoke community and togetherness. For “Motherland: Fort Salem,” we created a rendition that was both eerie and poignant, complemented by imagery of an alternative America grappling with terrorism and political struggles through powerful witches. The power of a song to connect with an audience is immense, especially when reimagined. Both commercials use “This Land Is Your Land” to show that our past still informs our present. Mark Twain said, “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.” Guthrie’s song, written during the Depression, resonates today in our divided society. In advertising, sometimes we need to recontextualize emotional stories from the past to create connections. Reframing this song brings people together and highlights the complexity of patriotism and power, making an emotional connection in different ways. #advertising #marketing

I believe everything of quality takes time. Time to think, time to build, time to adjust. It doesn’t matter if you’re working at a company and or starting a brand new venture. I am really excited to see that Dan Bee, my former student, has won 2 European Product Design Awards for her ‘Litter Ridder’ sweeping toy. This concept was conceived in my VT Industrial Design lab during the fall of 2022 based on a brief to explore past, obscure and electricity-free design that in many cases deserves reconsideration within current sustainable design discourse. Here, Dan Bee's class developed redesigns for the humble, manually-powered carpet sweeper, first introduced in the 19th century. Offered 2 years in a row, the range of design approaches were broad and addressed many different user types. Carpet Sweepers are quiet, use no electricity, yet they are surprisingly effective. Several sweepers, including a fully operational 1924 antique, were tested by students first-hand and with outside users.  Bissell and others continue to produce these today. The brief was informed by my book “Reimagining Alternative Technology for Design in the 21st Century” which broadly surveys these kinds of passive and manual technologies, with examples ranging from Persian Wind Catchers, Fireless Cookers, Zeer Pots and (of course) Manual Carpet Sweepers. Many of these technologies might not fully replace the ones we use today, but they certainly provide insight into designing more conscientiously with energy use, material lifecycle and longevity in mind. To that end, Dan Bee’s concept also proposes a repairable configuration using materials developed from renewable resources, including mycelium. As a toy, it also offers educational value to the young users who would be first to use them. Bravo Dan Bee!!!

Celebrating World Braille Day 🙌 Today, let's appreciate a beautiful aspect of human connection: Braille. January 4th marks World Braille Day, a time to recognise the immense value of Braille in empowering those who are blind or visually impaired. Braille isn't just a language, it's a bridge to inclusivity and independence. It enables individuals with sight impairments to access the same books, music scores, and mathematical formulas as everyone else. How amazing is that? Since its celebration began in 2019, World Braille Day has highlighted the importance of this essential communication tool. The pandemic underscored this need even more. With reduced physical contact, many visually impaired individuals faced increased isolation. Braille became a lifeline, allowing for continued learning and connection. Understanding Braille is straightforward yet profound. It consists of six dots, representing every letter, number, and symbol. This simplicity opens up a world of information and opportunity, levelling the educational and professional playing fields. As we reflect on the lessons from the lockdowns, one thing stands clear: the need for greater Braille accessibility. It's not just about communication, it's about ensuring everyone has the chance to engage fully in the world around them. Ever been warned not to rodeo ride lions bareback in the street? Context is everything. I saw this sign recently and had to take a photo. As with much in life, if you don’t already know what it’s telling you (don’t climb on the bronze lions in Trafalgar Square, London), the sign would not help you. When I look at this, I get a vision of a rodeo trick rider cantering down the road atop a giant beast… This got me thinking about how we give direction at work (this is how my brain works - I’m lateral!). I’ve worked with lots of leaders, through my career and as a consultant, who’ve given a team member what they feel is clear, supportive guidance about a task or issue. But the team member isnt ‘getting’ it. It’s a major source of frustration that I’m often asked to suggest solutions for. The team member is doing their best, but they don’t understand the basis of the instruction - so they’re focusing on the wrong thing. Looking out for live lions so they can avoid unintentional rodeo riding, instead of keeping off the bronzes en route to the National Gallery. I get that we are short of time, and every detail isn’t needed for every task to get done. But next time your people ‘just aren’t getting it (big eyeroll)’ - maybe try offering a bit of context?
