Lunchtime musings. I've contacted those #recruiting roles in #PR and #Communications via LinkedIn many times prior to applying. As a rule, if a job ad comes with an identified job poster, I'll probably drop them a line, if interested in it, to ask questions. This is particularly true if my skills and experience don't match exactly what they are looking for. Most write back. If they have a specific needs that I don't meet, we've both saved time submitting and reading/rejecting. Or they invite you to apply because you might have what they want, though this connection doesn't necessarily get you shortlisted (nor should it). However, some don't reply at all which is odd because I see no reason to put the recruiter details on the ad unless they are inviting contact. I also consider this a red flag for a potential employer. Appreciate many people are busy, but if they are appearing to be open and approachable and are found not to be at this early stage, there may be a deeper cultural issue about their values and whether or not they live them. This is comms after all!

Wow, my last post about crappy hiring practices really blew up. Which can mean either: I’m an incredibly talented writer who should probably start writing lists of ‘how I hit 300k subscribers in just 1 week’ or something. OR It hit a nerve, because people are FED UP. And the job market is saturated. 🤷♀️ I’d love to turn this into something positive. And because even though LinkedIn calls it ‘engagement’, clicking isn’t really all that helpful. There, I said it. Here’s some actions we can take: 1. Report it! If you see a job description that looks illegal, exploitative or a scam, report it to LinkedIn, your local worker’s agency or union. In New Zealand you can report it to Commerce Commission. 2. Join a union. Join several. 3. Talk about what good looks like. I see lots of folks on here talking about pay transparency, flexible work and I am here for it. #ShowTheSalary 4. Use your networks. Something dodgy going around? Share it and spread the word. 5. Celebrate those who are doing good stuff. Recruiters, companies, direct clients, whatever. Do they follow the Circle Back Initiative for giving feedback to all applicants? Anything else you’d add to the list? Anyone you’d like to celebrate on a public forum? I’ll add links in comments.
