Today felt like the perfect time to jump back into LinkedIn. The last 10-12 months have been quite a journey both personally and professionally. This post isn't meant to relive the last year but to encourage everyone that when your life is turned upside down unexpectedly, it can lead to wonderful outcomes. I found through prayer, reflection, and unwavering support from friends and family, what was initially something extraordinarily difficult became a true blessing. Some will notice I have a "gap" in my work history now. About 4 months. 4 months to jettison a lot of baggage, get my mind and body back to neutral (thank you Brendan Ferns for recommending Getting to Neutral by Trevor Moawad), and to dream again. 4 months to reconnect with my wife and start to make decisions that are focused on me and my family first, not what a job might dictate or require. Call it a gap or a sabbatical or whatever you'd like; I knew in order to be the best for my family and for wherever I chose to go professionally, I had to reset. In October of 2023 I got to meet with some of the team at Grubb Ventures. I wasn't sure if I was ready to come off the sidelines yet. Was I mentally ready? Did I complete my "factory reset?" A few things were clear that were critical to me: 1. The leaders truly cared about the people there. It wasn't lip service or just some core value splattered on a wall. 2. They believed the company was ready to make smart, strategic changes in response to recent growth (I like leading through change believe or not). 3. Grubb cares about the community they live and work in. I joined Grubb as its CFO in November (I know I'm late posting about it). And today we sorted and packed eggs at the Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC. We did it together. Just like we do each day at the office. I'm so thankful to the team at Grubb for choosing me. I'm grateful to everyone who supported me this last year, especially my wife and family. And while I know God doesn't ever have to reveal His plan for me, I'm blessed that He continues to orient my steps.

There's no denying it: there are folks struggling right now. It's messy out there, and it can feel like there's no reprieve from all the nastiness. Social media certainly doesn't help at times (and yes, I am aware of the irony of using social media while decrying negative effects.) Some of our agency partners are overwhelmed with requests for service. There is something we can do about it. I'll give you the Cole's Notes version of the starfish story. A man throwing land-bound starfish back into the sea tells a skeptical passerby that his action didn't save ALL the creatures, but made a difference to the ones he tossed back. And that is why, if world and local events are getting to you, give volunteering a shot. Few of us have the power and influence to sit down those who do and say "Stop that. Fix this. Help them." I know I wish I did. But what you can do is learn how to say on a smaller level, "Please don't do that. It's ruining the environment. See?" "Let's get those people into a shelter." "Would you like me to repair that door? I can." Will it make a difference on the world-wide scale? Maybe not. But you have just shown someone that dumping their trash on the rail trail is not good for the animals that live near it. You've helped someone survive on the streets for another week or month. You've helped a struggling single parent make their home more secure. You've helped someone. Someone who may feel like paying it forward in the future. It may not have been a grand gesture, but you made a difference to that starfish. We love the creative ways our corporate partners help us to tell the world about our mission to transform children’s futures with targeted reading support! Today we are excited to be supporting the launch of a story competition with our platinum partner, the Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation. Stop Hunger is an employee-led independent registered charity focusing on tackling food insecurity and its root causes. Sodexo UK and Ireland’s Parents and Carers network is sponsoring the competition which invites employees to use some of their paid volunteering time to craft an online children's story on the theme of Bringing People Together Through Food. Sodexo employees are being encouraged to co-author their entries with their child(ren) or other young people in their immediate circle. And – since the story is meant for children – the adult entrants are also being asked to nominate one of their co-authors to be a member of the judging panel. The winning story – to be announced on next year’s International Day of Families – will be professionally edited, illustrated, and published on the Chapter One reading platform for use by volunteers. It will also be added to Chapter One’s Global Free Library where thousands of children will read it worldwide!
