As the election has now been announced, we share our hopes for the changes ahead: Investment in Education and Training: Advocating for increased funding and resources for employability-rich education and training programmes to ensure that young people have access to high-quality learning opportunities that equip them with the essential skills they need. Expansion of Vocational Education: Supporting policies that promote the expansion and enhancement of vocational education and apprenticeship programmes, providing alternative pathways to traditional academic routes and facilitating smooth transitions into the workforce. Enhanced Career Guidance and Support Services: Improved career guidance and support services within schools, colleges, and communities to help young people explore career options, make informed decisions, and navigate the job market effectively. Promotion of Digital Literacy and STEM Skills: Emphasising the importance of digital literacy, as well as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) skills, to prepare young people for careers in a rapidly evolving technological landscape and address skills gaps in key industries. Support for Work-Based Learning Opportunities: Advocating for policies that encourage the creation of work-based learning opportunities, such as internships, job shadowing, and real experience of work, to allow young people to gain practical experience, develop employability skills, and build professional networks. The underrepresentation of women in digital & IT has turned attention to how employers and educators can make it easier to access tech-focused roles. 👏 And according to Deputy Head of Apprenticeships and Projects in Digital & IT, Cheryl Macfarlane, an avenue that often isn't championed enough is the digital workshop. In a piece for Leeds Digital, Cheryl outlines the benefits these workshops provide, including the opportunity for extra knowledge-gathering - and how this can sometimes be the deciding factor in whether a woman applies for a vacancy or not. "The data shows that, despite possessing transferable skills, women are less likely to apply for roles when they don’t meet 100% of the criteria, compared to men who apply when they meet 60%. "Workshops, therefore, provide educators and recruiters with a way to put women’s minds at ease by drawing attention to what else they are bringing to the table." Did you know today is World Youth Skills Day? To me, it's a great reminder to recognize the pressing need for 600 million jobs to be created over the next 15 years to meet youth employment needs. The rise in the share of youth not in employment, education, or training to 23.3% highlights the urgency for action. Investing in quality apprenticeships, internships, and volunteering initiatives can provide vital entry points into the labor market for young people. One of the solutions to end youth unemployment in my country is to better prepare young people for the job market. This means providing them with the skills and competencies that employers need and demand. According to the World Economic Forum, there is a growing mismatch between the skills people have and those that employers need1. This leads to a difficult school-to-work transition and a waste of human potential. To address this problem, educational institutions should incorporate entrepreneurship into the curriculum and work with employers to ensure they offer students the appropriate training. This will help young people develop the creativity, innovation, problem-solving and teamwork skills that are essential for the 21st century. Moreover, employers should create entry-level job opportunities, implement school-to-work apprenticeships and on-the-job training programmes, and support young entrepreneurs through mentoring. This will help young people gain practical experience, build networks and access opportunities. By better preparing young people for the job market, we can reduce the skills gap, increase the employability and productivity of youth, and meet the needs of the labour market. #Moulding4workchallenge2024

We've all seen it – bright, talented young individuals pouring their hearts into their education, only to find themselves hitting walls when it comes to finding meaningful employment. According to a recent study by the World Bank, the global youth unemployment rate stands at a staggering 13.1%, with many regions facing even higher numbers. But here's the kicker – it's not about lacking degrees or skills. Our education system, while valuable, often falls short in preparing our youth for the dynamic demands of the modern workforce. We're teaching them equations and theories but not always how to navigate real-world challenges, adapt to rapid changes, or showcase their unique talents and strengths. Imagine a world where every young person feels confident, empowered, and equipped to take on the opportunities waiting for them. That's the world I envision, and it's within our reach if we're willing to rethink how we approach education. So, how can we turn the tide and create a brighter future for our youth? It starts with a collective effort: 1. Embracing Skills-Based Learning: Let's shift our focus from rote memorization to practical, hands-on learning experiences. Internships, apprenticeships, and real-world projects can bridge the gap between education and employment. 2. Fostering Entrepreneurial Mindsets: Encouraging creativity, innovation, and a spirit of entrepreneurship can empower young minds to create their opportunities and solutions. 3. It's a wrap on November and this past month I've had 41 meetings, 71 phone calls, 15 train journeys and conversations with 36 local authorities. Over November I’ve; 💸Worked to reduce the impact of funding cuts to local areas and support the development of business cases to show the value investing in services for young people 💷Worked with community interest groups on diversifying income streams 🧑⚖️Explored new ways to engage in people in the youth justice system 🗳️Support local authorities with planning for youth elections 🦠Looked at how we can teach about the importance of global health initiatives 👨👩👦Consulted on the development of wraparound care offers in education 📊Broken down key performance indicators and worked with new groups to map how they’re able to meet targets 🧑🏫Looked at how we can provide young people led CPD training for professionals 🏥Supported charities who work on improving end-of-life care for children and young people 📝Developed a new brand and corporate messaging guidelines 🧑🎓Launched recruitment for a new headteacher and played a role in staff appraisals and performance reviews 👔Supported the delivery of the UK Youth Parliament's House of Commons debate and inducted the new young leaders of the programme 🙏Debated the role elected representatives have when attending cultural celebrations 🏆Opened nominations for a new awards programme to recognise and celebrate the success of projects led by young people and the support staff that empower this 🧑🔧Worked with sector leaders on how we can open up more apprenticeships and internships 🏠Explored options for how to ensure that someone's postcode doesn't negatively effect someones opportunities
