Tomorrow, several CISUTAC project partners will present our modular and semi-automated zipper repair workstation as part of the Circular & Biobased Textiles Innovation Hub organised by Textile ETP 🛠️ While most zipper repairs are done using standard sewing machines, the process can be challenging and time-consuming (over 40 minutes per zipper) due to the need for specific spare parts and customisation based on the unique size and components of each zipper. To address this issue, the CISUTAC consortium created a modular, semi-automated concept that can adapt to different processes and materials, allowing operators to work more efficiently. The event also highlighted the EU's impending Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation reform, which aims to make all packaging reusable or recyclable by 2030, underscoring the need for sustainable consumption and waste prevention. And transparency is key in today's market. With rising consumer and investor demands, knowing the origin of products has never been more crucial. Why ‘Sustainability’ is more than just a buzzword at DAVID GOTLIB: With nature being one of my primary sources of inspiration for my cufflink designs, I never looked at sustainability as a simple tick box exercise. To me, sustainability was always going to be a key tenet of the brand. The first place I started was choosing where we’d source the materials for our cufflinks - the Gold and the Diamonds. We decided from Day One to only use 100% recycled Gold and not mined gold. It was actually a bit of a challenge to find a Belgium-based fully sustainable gold retailer and I ended up partnering with a company outside of Belgium. And regarding the Diamonds, I selected a supplier that gave us full transparency on where and how the Diamonds were manufactured to ensure that they come from conflict-free zones and employ best practices in their mines. And when it came to opening up our own atelier here in Antwerp, sustainability was at the core of many of the business decisions. From what type of work stations we purchase, to which cleaning utensils to buy, to opting for glass and ceramic cups over plastic mugs, we chose what was more sustainable over which option was more cost-effective. So when you buy a pair of DAVID GOTLIB cufflinks, of course you’re buying a beautiful and high-quality product that’s built to last. But more importantly, you’re buying a product that was created with a deep respect for the world around us.

A Nordic interregional collaboration is now commencing to demonstrate how workwear companies can prepare, and adapt their global value chains to the upcoming EU regulations on circular economy. The goal is to assist workwear producers in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway in becoming more sustainable through circular product design, production, and service concepts. Recently, the consortium partners convened for an initial meeting at The Swedish School of Textiles to discuss the project framework, which is a feasibility study intended to lead to a multi-year project involving workwear companies in the Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak (ÖKS) region. Partners in this feasibility study: University of Borås, Aalborg University Business School, and Circular Innovation Lab ApS. The feasibility study is funded by the EU through the Interreg Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak European Regional Development Fund. Today I was presenting at a webinar organised by Green Button in cooperation with Bündnis für nachhaltige Textilien (Partnership for Sustainable Textiles) and GIZ Fabric on the topic of the upcoming Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (#ESPR). It was moderated by Magali Minet and was fully booked with more than 200 participants. When trying to map the EU regulations and directives relevant for the #TextileSector which are currently being prepared or revised under the #EuropeanGreenDeal with the European Commission, European Parliament and the Council, I realized once again the magnitude of the challenge. And it is very hard to be exhaustive. The co-speaker Roman Houlbreque added further examples, focusing on the #digitalproductpassport, while the final contribution by Gabrielle Shiner-Hill provided the perspective of specialists in 3D fabric digitisation. It's clear that this massive wave of regulations and directives (the latter will in turn require national transpositions) will require significant resources and collaboration also further down the road when it comes to their implementation. The ESPR is a good example because it "only" creates the framework for more (product-specific) rules in the years to come. It's good to have a webinar series like the present one which is focusing on a package of upcoming legislation for a specific industry sector.
