I had 5 years at operation section of Riffa Power Station as Shift Charge Engineer, below some observations and recommendations that can help whom concern, applicable on most operation facilities: 1- Confidence is really making the difference, an engineer with low level of confidence cannot survive long time as shift in charge as this position requires immediate decisions and sometimes at emergencies! 2- Personality, shift charge engineer leads group of technicians and operators and has to be their father regardless of the ages. It is normal and happening that you help someone older than you +10 in solving personal issues in order to have him awake, focus and ready for you all the time. 3- Trust your team but do not sign on any Safety Document until you check all relevant points by yourself. 4- Final decisions are yours, take them after discussion with your team, remember that you are the most authorized member in the team, you will be in the face at any abnormal case! 5- Standard Operation Procedures (SOP) has to be in your mind all the time, read it frequently and refer to them at any vague case. 6- OEM Manual is your technical reference, do not rely on any other document! 7- Around 40% of your duty time is standby, use it efficiently in reading, learning and understanding every part in your facilities.

Here’s a shot of our Field Technician Federico Sabess performing a battery swap at our 4263 3rd Avenue in the Bronx. At this site, we have one vibration monitor installed that is monitoring a retaining wall for a neighboring property. In most instances, power will be provided by either the neighbor or our client with standard AC power supply, allowing the monitor to continuously do its job uninterrupted. In this instance, no power was able to be provided by either the client or neighbor, which requires some creativity. Thankfully, the members of our team are no strangers to solving problems. To compensate for this power absence, Federico is seen here performing the swap with two car batteries that will keep the monitors powered and charged for approximately one month. After the swap is performed, our team will bring the batteries back to our office to charge and re-use when needed. Unexpected issues can appear at any moment when you’re performing inspections and conducting tests out in the field.
