This includes new structures, materials and manufacturing processes. The goal is to move towards environmentally-friendly and cost-effective aviation in the civil arena and high-performance and effective aviation in the military arena. New aircraft design is essential to address issues such as carbon footprint reduction, lower noise pollution and improved passenger comfort; as well as contributing to national security. Our work in this field covers all flying vehicles including civil and military aircraft, helicopters, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Systems (UAVS), ultra-high capacity airlines and space vehicles.

7th December… It’s a busy old day. Not only is it Christmas Jumper Day and the seventh window on the Advent calendar (chocolate holly leaf this morning, if you were wondering), but it’s also #InternationalCivilAviationDay … a significant day for all of us at Draken Europe and Draken US. In common with our colleagues in the #adversarytraining sector, as a civilian organisation delivering vital frontline #defencetraining, we occupy a distinct corner of the civil aviation arena (which includes flying a fleet of agile fighter jets on the UK civil register alongside a fleet of electronic warfare-equipped business jets). It’s also worth noting the theme for this year’s International Civil Aviation Day: Advancing Innovation for Global Aviation Development. Yes… We definitely do that too! As we highlighted earlier this week, Draken’s team is central to the ongoing Project ALIAS trials, working alongside a consortium that includes the likes of Volant Autonomy. The purpose? To establish an Agile Integrated Airspace System (ALIAS) – in a nutshell, developing the system that will allow crewed and uncrewed aircraft to operate safely in the same congested airspace. Flying our little Diamond DA42 (pictured) alongside UAVs is just one of many trials and technological development strands that Draken is involved in using crewed and uncrewed aircraft… So, happy International Civil Aviation Day to one and all – and keep innovating! #Draken #avgeeks #civilaviation

What’s that you asked? What am I thankful for? Well, let me tell you! First, I am thankful that my family is safe, healthy and home for the holiday. Second, I am thankful to live in this amazing country. Third, I am thankful for the incredible AMPV team that delivers on the myriad of challenges I throw at them daily, like delivering that magnificent, meat-eating beast you see in the photo. Let’s talk about that last one a little more. Just over a year ago I challenged a small group of people to design, develop, integrate and demonstrate a 30mm C-UAS capability on an AMPV. Last week they finished the task. From start to finish, it only took them 15 months. On 15 Nov, at the Big Sandy range in AZ the industry team of BAE Systems, Moog, Rada, and Northrup drove the same AMPV you saw at #AUSA2023 on to the range and began to devour all types of targets at all types of ranges: stationary ground targets, movers, and most impressively tiny quad copter drones. I just want to speak to the pace and versatility of AMPV. In that short time the BAE Systems team developed an external mission equipment package (ExMEP), or universal top plate, that enables the AMPV to host 30+ different turrets. Then, our team linked up with Moog and incorporated the Moog RIwP turret that is used on M-SHORAD. The BAE team showed it to you at AUSA in Oct23 and then successfully fired it in Nov23 -- but that’s not the end. Currently, there is a 120mm turreted mortar integrated on an AMPV in our prototype shop. More to come on that soon… Talk about a versatile platform – five existing variants in production today, a C-UAS variant that was live fired last week, and a turreted mortar making moves early next year. BAE Systems recently acquired British technology business Malloy Aeronautics Ltd. which it will integrate into FalconWorks. Malloy Aeronautics is an uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) design and services firm headquartered just outside of London. They also have a presence in the US and Australia. Malloy's core expertise is in heavy-lift, unmanned, VTOL vehicles. "BAE Systems and Malloy Aeronautics engineers have been collaborating to develop the 300kg T-650 all-electric ‘heavy lift’ UAS as a potential new solution to deliver cost-effective, sustainable rapid response capability to military, security and civilian customers." BAE has a great opportunity to leverage Malloy's innovative, SMB culture to advance FalconWorks' role as the BAE Systems innovation arm. And Malloy Aeronautics will hopefully benefit from the increase in resources, customer relationships, and brand reputation that BAE brings to the table. We've often seen this type of acquisition - a large traditional defense contractor buying a smaller, innovative company - fail to achieve the desired ROIC. There are multiple reasons for this but one of them is crushing the acquired company's unique culture. Perhaps this will be an exception. The primary objective of the programme is to leverage collaborative activities in human resource development through capacity building in education and training in the area of Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS). 

Perhaps not the most technically-advanced CUAS (Counter Unmanned Aerial System) out there but it is clearly one that works.   I wonder if there is a way to reinforce the wingtips, so the aircraft could physically knock the drone out the sky. Primary take-away: Wow. What presence of mind in the midst of a crisis. I’m sure rigorous training was part of what enabled this pilot’s incredible performance!!! Secondary take-away: Every step in a preflight checklist is important. Tertiary take-away: Vigilance is necessary both in flight AND on the ground. Even being able to perform heroically during a crisis doesn’t obviate the need for vigilance during less critical timeframes. Both should work in unison to be the best. Maybe that’s the lesson here??
