The manufacturing and construction industries in the US are seeking more workers to fill a growing and productive economy. These workforces often dictate how much other industries can grow and plan for the future. Construction and manufacturing firms, in need of trained and skilled workers, are adopting new hiring and talent development strategies. Blue collar is becoming white hot Growing up in an automotive and steel mill town, the goal was to get a college degree and a good white collar job. However, it feels like we’ve come 360. Gen Z is leading a resurgence in blue-collar jobs, and it’s changing the employment landscape. Traditionally, skilled trades have been overlooked in favor of college degrees. However, the tide is turning as Gen Z embraces careers in plumbing, electrical work, and other trades. Why? Job security, decent wages, and the satisfaction of tangible work are driving this trend. Moreover, these jobs are immune to the threat of automation, making them even more appealing. Companies are taking note, investing in apprenticeship programs and promoting the benefits of skilled trades to younger generations. I'm thrilled to see Universal Technical Institute, Inc. included in The Wall Street Journal! The article highlights how Gen Z students are pursuing the skilled trades instead of college -- and among those profiled is our recent Long Beach graduate Tanner Burgess, the son of tech workers, who decided to become a welder. Our country needs more of what I refer to as "skilled collar" workers as older generations retire. However, there is still more work to do when it comes to encouraging students to consider career paths beyond traditional four-year degrees. According to a survey from YouScience, 66% more students have an aptitude for careers in advanced manufacturing than interest.
