Daily Bread Food Bank and North York Harvest Food Bank have released their annual #WhosHungry2023 report, announcing that visits to Toronto food banks have increased by almost one million in the last year – marking the highest annual increase ever reported.   In the last year, there were 2.53 million client visits to Toronto food banks. The findings within this year’s report illustrate the grim reality of food insecurity in the city, along with the deep strain faced by food banks and those who rely on them.   “Food is a human right and immediate government action is needed to ensure that every person in our city can live a life of dignity,” says Neil Hetherington, CEO, Daily Bread Food Bank. During the month of August, there were more than 274,000 visits to Daily Bread member food banks - nearly four times the number before the pandemic. To put these figures into perspective, that would fill the Rogers Centre to capacity seven times, and that's only one month. “I used to say the person using a food bank is the person sitting across from you on a streetcar, but now, it’s the person sitting across from you in a cubicle," said Neil Hetherington, CEO at Daily Bread Food Bank. With shortages of decent work, a lack of affordable housing, and high inflation, there are a number of factors currently at play when it comes to the unprecedented rise in food bank use. As the need for food banks grows and the diversity of the people experiencing food insecurity seeking support increases, building welcoming and accessible spaces is more critical than ever.  To help food banks support the equity-deserving populations accessing their services, we developed Without Barriers, Stigma, or Fear: A Practical Guide to Accessibility and Equity for Food Banks, in collaboration with peer researchers from coast-to-coast-to-coast. By centering the voices of those most impacted by and with lived experiences of food insecurity, this practical document aims to help the food banking network adopt more equitable and accessible practices, with attention to the fear and discrimination people often experience when accessing services like food banks.   “I had finally reached rock bottom. In desperation, I contacted my local community food support. It took all the courage I could muster to show up. I sobbed for an hour before I could get out of my vehicle and approach the intake worker.
