“His invisibility is his genius” Tom Rothrock produced Back to Bedlam, the bestselling debut album from James Blunt. And Blunt is grateful for the hidden-hand influence that Rothrock had on the endeavour. Here’s the full quote, with added context: “He just sets up the environment for you to make the music and [to] draw from you. His invisibility is his genius, because he can really pull from you what it is you’re trying to say.” This leaves me in the strange situation of having two new role models, one of whom (Blunt) is uncool, and one of whom (Rothrock) is invisible. Like Blunt, I made my peace with being uncool a long time ago. Self awareness is the great joy of getting older. It’s also a huge energy saver. Being yourself takes a fraction of the effort of trying to be someone else. And that goes for brands as well as people. Authenticity FTW. Like Rothrock, I like my influence to be invisible. The most effective approach to brand consultancy is to create an environment in which the true becomes the obvious. Friday: Oust -> Success Recently,  I got hold of the famous book by Mark Manson "The subtle art of not giving a sh*t". In the book, the transformation story of two musicians and their criteria for success caught my attention, so I am sharing it here - 1. Dave Mustaine: Kicked out from Metallica, Dave formed Megadeth, a successful band with great albums, loyal fans and money. Despite this success, he tries to chase Metallica's achievements. As a result, he was never satisfied and admitted once that he still considered himself a failure. 2. Pete Best: Ousted from The Beatles, Best didn’t become a rockstar or make great fortune. Yet, Best was happy and successful in his own accord. He said that getting kicked out of the band got the best things in his life - made him meet his wife, then marriage and children. His values changed and he began to measure his life differently i.e. fame & glory over a loving relationship. What do you think of these examples? Over the past few weeks, we've witnessed an intriguing musical rivalry between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. Unless you've been living under a rock, you've undoubtedly been subjected to this meteoric clash of 2 hip hop living legends. This battle, culminating in a decisive victory for Kendrick, has much to teach us about the principles of essentialism versus non-essentialism. Kendrick Lamar has long been an advocate of the essentialist philosophy, focusing on what is truly important and disregarding the rest. His career has been characterized by a clear, unwavering commitment to his core values and artistic vision. This laser focus has allowed him to produce work that is not only deeply impactful but also consistently high in quality. On the other hand, Drake's approach can be seen as more non-essentialist. While incredibly talented and versatile, Drake's career has been marked by a more diffuse focus. He excels in many areas but often spreads himself thin, trying to be everything to everyone. This lack of prioritization, especially in his battle with Kendrick, ultimately led to him taking the L. Kendrick's victory is a testament to the power of essentialism. By prioritizing his most important goals and staying true to his artistic identity, he was able to deliver a more compelling and cohesive body of work. This serves as a powerful reminder that in both music and life, focusing on what truly matters can make all the difference. As I'm reading "Essentialism" right now, I'm reminded of how these principles apply not just to our personal and professional lives, but also to the creative pursuits we follow. It's about doing less, but better – focusing on what is essential, and eliminating what is not. As of this post, I am currently evaluating a project that my manager asked me to undertake. Before saying yes, I'm assessing whether it aligns with my goals and objectives. The art of the essentialist is to develop strict criteria for determining the essentiality of any project or task. If it doesn't meet these criteria, it's important to weed it out to continue focusing on what provides the highest value. I invite all of you to embrace the essentialist mindset. Prioritize what truly matters, eliminate the non-essential, and watch how it transforms your life and work. Let's strive to do less, but better.

🎶🎸Wish you were here… I was part of the dramatic society in college, where discussing plays and short stories threadbare was our intellectual stimulation. There was something electric about those debates, the way we dissected the works of Jean-Paul Sartre and Saadat Hasan Manto. And of course, there was music to feed our brains as well—one of my favorite bands, Pink Floyd. "Wish You Were Here" was the anthem of our reflective moments, while "Another Brick in the Wall" had us singing with our lungs bursting, defying everything that felt confining or conventional. But here’s a little-known story about Pink Floyd that always stuck with me. Before they became the iconic band that still makes hearts throb with their eternal music, they were known as "The Tea Set." It wasn’t until they entered a competition that a sudden twist changed everything. Imagine the scene… A band, ready to perform, finds out another group with the exact same name is also competing. Panic? Perhaps. But what followed was a moment of pure, quick-thinking creativity. Syd Barrett, their frontman, didn’t have time to deliberate. He drew inspiration from two blues musicians he admired—Pink Anderson and Floyd Council, both masters of their craft in the genre that would later influence so many greats. Pink and Floyd were artists who lived their lives in the rhythm and blues of the American South, crafting songs that were raw, real, and deeply human. Their names, fused together in a moment of necessity, became a symbol of timeless artistry. It’s funny how a name born out of necessity can end up defining something so eternal. Pink Floyd—born from a fleeting moment, now a legend! This story always makes me wonder… What makes someone or something story-worthy? Who do we look to for inspiration when we’re forging our own paths? The truth is, few people or moments inspire the kind of remembrance that lives on, but those who do often guide us in choosing our destiny, just as Pink Anderson and Floyd Council did for Syd Barrett. So, can we become story-worthy? Can we inspire others in a way that lasts? It’s a question worth pondering. Ever had a moment like that? One that changed everything?
