I would like to share an interesting cross-border acquisition. On 17th of July Fnac Darty announces its intention to acquire Unieuro S.p.A., Italy’s leading distributor of consumer electronics and domestic appliances. This strategic acquisition, in partnership with Ruby Equity Investment, aims to bolster European leadership in specialized retail. Fnac Darty's takeover bid of Unieuro S.p.A. is a good reminder of an industry that's seeking change to grow and attraction. Operating brick-and-mortar stores is expensive, and being a specialized reseller in Europe is not an easy prospect. It's not only the Fnac/Darty - Unieuro Story. To mention a few: - Currys plc sold it Greek and Cyprian Kotsovolos-Κωτσόβολος to local PPC S.A.. - CECONOMY (MediaMarkt) sold its Portuguese branch to Fnac/Darty last year, and its Swedish branch to POWER International AS - JD.COM had a takeover-bid of Currys earlier in the year, but pulled out. - BCC in the Netherlands went bankrupt in 2023. So what are some of the tactics seeking to help this channel segment: ➡ Building scale: This will cause consolidation towards a few players, but might be what's required to succeed in the long-run. FNAC/Darty is currently expanding the most in the region, likely backed by ambitions from it's largest shareholder Vesa Equity Investment. ➡ New capital (and ideas): A new wave of investors is expected to come in from outside Europe. I think it will be key for these to contribute new ideas as well to help reignite interest in electronics retail. The long-term development of the stock prices makes the electronics retailers attractive to new investors, although it still comes with a high risk (just look at the graph below!) ➡ Subscription services to find steady revenue and higher margin products. Examples of what is added includes comprehensive after-sales support and loyalty reward schemes. ➡ Launching marketplaces: To compete directly with ecommerce giants such as Amazon and Alza.cz a.s.. Although it might come at a risk of not delivering to the same standard customers can get from buying directly from the retailer. #Malls and #departmentstore share several similarities, as both are #retail environments designed to cater to a diverse range of #consumer needs and various #shopperjourney. Below are some learning we've gained while working with leading malls and department stores: 1. Know your Anchors... Malls frequently have anchor stores, similarly, department stores have their anchors departments. Measuring and recognizing your anchors must not based solely on sales, it must also rely on in-mall/in-store traffic behaviors or else your insights might rely on a hunch. We've seen anchors generating significant traffic while failing to deliver sufficient sales... 2. Entertainment and Dining: Malls and department stores often include entertainment activities, such as food courts, shows, lectures etc. The idea is to encourages more visitors to come, spend more time in the space and also to improve the overall shopping experience. But how do you measure the impact? Here are some lessons we've gained: 1. Some activities serve well some zones of your mall/departments store, while having negative impact on the traffic and time spent in other zones of the site. While a mall should handle with tenants whom are loosing traffic, a department store should manage its employees accordingly (sales objectives, KPIs', workforce scheduling etc.) 2. Special activities might change shoppers walking directions. When recognizing those patterns a mall could advise its #popup stores how to face their displays and teams. Ross Stores Inc (NASDAQ:ROST) stock rose more than 5% in extended trading Thursday after the company topped third-quarter expectations and boosted its guidance.  The discount retailer posted earnings of $1.33 per share on revenue of $4.92 billion, compared to expectations of $1.22 per share on revenue of $4.85 billion.  Looking ahead, #RossStores guided for full-year earnings between $5.30 and $5.36 per share, up from its previous guidance of $5.15 to $5.26 per share.  CEO Barbara Rentler noted that consumers have increasingly turned to discount stores like Ross in recent quarters due to rising prices across sectors.  "We remain confident in the resilience of the off-price sector... especially given consumers' heightened focus on value and convenience," Rentler said in a statement.  More at #Proactive #ProactiveInvestors #NASDAQ #ROST http://ow.ly/z0Ye1052cuI

The Container Store’s sales have been on a downward trajectory. It posted a fiscal fourth-quarter sales decline of 20.7% in the period that ended March 30. It hasn’t achieved a full-year profit since 2021. The NYSE has even threatened to delist its stock as it is trading as a penny stock, and more trouble might be on the horizon for the Dallas-based national chain of 102 stores. But here’s the surprise. The Container Store is still expanding its brick-and-mortar presence. It plans to open four new stores in fiscal 2024, as well as relocate one store and close one store.

Costco Wholesale's (NASDAQ: COST) stock has surged 23% since the start of this year, surpassing the 11% growth of the S&P index. Meanwhile, Walmart (NYSE: WMT) saw a similar 24% increase in its stock value during the same period. The company's expansion into China seems promising as sales overseas, including in China, grew by 7.7% year-on-year. With seven stores in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities in China, Costco Wholesale is making a mark in the Chinese market, boasting a remarkable 93% membership renewal rate in China compared to the global rate of 90.5%. CFO Gary Millerchip believes there's immense growth potential in China, stating, "We're just getting started in the China market, but there's a tremendous opportunity for growth when we're on the right track." Recently, Costco Wholesale opened its seventh store in my hometown Nanjing, China, while Walmart introduced its second Sam's Club store in the same city.
