Many operators in the long term care sector are struggling to stay aloat financially. The usual culprits are higher labor costs and inflation. Yet most operators don't realize the enormous hidden cost related to professional liability insurance premiums and deductibles - they consider these "the cost of doing business." But premiums are on average $1-3 million per facility per year. 😱 And they go up when facilities have more falls, medication errors, or generally poor quality care. Facilities also pay deductibles for claims related to falls, medication errors, or other injury. These average $50,000-$100,000 per incident. In our pilot, we found that on average there were 7 falls per year resulting in hospitalization. If say, just 3 of these resulted in a claim, that's $300,000 out the door before an investigation is even started. And that's just falls. How about medication errors, on the job injury, workers' compensation? There is a simple and inexpensive solution: Invest in training. It's a really good thing to provide care professionals with training in best practices for safety, communication, teamwork, critical thinking and problem solving. We need providers to stay in business and provide the care that so many older adults and people living with disabilities need. To do that, they need to invest in their staff. Last week AHIP met in Las Vegas. Here's a summary of some of the topics: - A year ago, insurers were expanding Medicare plans. Now, with reduced funding from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), they're worried about 2025 plans. - After acquiring Change Healthcare, UnitedHealth is dealing with the aftermath of a ransomware attack that disrupted healthcare providers. - This year's conference focuses on artificial intelligence in healthcare, coverage for obesity medications, and health equity. - There's less focus on employer-sponsored health plans compared to past years. - Despite the Haven project failing, Amazon and JPMorgan Chase are still looking for ways to get involved in health insurance, with representatives attending the conference.
