What are you grateful for? "WTF? Has he lost it?" "Has John stopped obsessing about observability and is now hanging out with hippy thought leader gurus who charge too much money for their lame courses and believe in The Secret?" No! I just think that feeling gratitude every day is an amazing habit. Totally off topic, I know. Today, what are you grateful for? OK, fine, I'll start then. I'm grateful for: 1. Working with excellent talented engineers who kick ass 2. Having an amazing CEO who will listen to a multitude of ideas and encourage folk to champion them 3. Being able to work from anywhere, any time 4. Not being pressured to have my bum in chair for X number of hours 5. My family - we've gone through some really tough times in the last year but we've emerged much stronger 6. My partner - for the love she and I share together 7. For having a pretty amazing brain that is always my biggest asset, even though I've abused it pretty badly over the years 8. A chance to build a business that will have a real impact to engineers everywhere and allow us to build much better software quicker There are more... ...now it's your turn. I know it sounds a bit weird... ...but I think we have pretty incredible opportunities as engineers. I'm not tone deaf to the challenges some have getting a job. It's really tough out there. But the reality is that it will recover. It will get better. I still maintain I have one of the cushiest careers that I'm aware of. Appreciate everyone who has reached out to congratulate me on my 9 year anniversary at IFI. It got me thinking on a long plane ride back home ... how is my work life different being a small business owner, compared to when someone else was responsible for making sure I received a paycheck every 2 weeks? At IFI, we have a "Lessons Learned" debrief after every client advisory board, consensus panel or KOL Connect so this is my attempt at a "Lessons Learned" over the past 9 years. This is not meant to be all encompassing or proclaim they lack importance at a larger company. Just a few things I believe are magnified in my world. As a small caveat, this was not AI generated, but came from my own mental capacity, and I must say was a bit cathartic to write down. 🙂 9 “Lessons Learned” that are magnified as a small business owner: 1.     While I would love to be everywhere all the time, I can’t do it. Create a culture of transparency, hire the right employees, make them feel valued and allow them to take ownership with clients. 2.     We exist because our clients provide us opportunities. Never take those for granted. 3.     We are very good at what we do, but referrals and repeat business are the ultimate compliment. 4.     The word “partnership” is overused. Collaborative client/provider relationships require effort and trust from both sides, and are more likely to evolve into a true partnership over time. 5.     Mistakes will happen. It’s all about how quickly you take responsibility, take corrective action and learn so it doesn’t happen again. 6.     If someone is “dancing in your lifeboat,” take action quickly (some of you will recognize this reference to Kevin Brown, one of my all-time favorite leadership mentors). 7.     Small business ownership is highly rewarding and comes with the ultimate responsibility. We provide career opportunities and gainful employment for some incredibly smart, talented and amazing people. 8.     Celebrate accomplishments, but don’t spend too much time patting yourself on the back. 9.    "Thank you" does not last forever ... it is virtually impossible to express appreciation too often.

Can you believe it's already the end of the month? As we wrap up another month, it's the perfect time to pause and reflect on our journey so far. Take a moment to celebrate your wins, big and small, and acknowledge the progress you've made towards your goals. What are you grateful for? The year 2023 is such an eventful year. If there is still a plan yet to be achieved, do not beat yourself so hard for there is still time but If you think deeply you will have so much to be grateful for. Your life is shaped by the people you meet and the experiences you share. Some leave faint marks, and some become a part of the journey. I'm grateful for the incredible individuals who surround me today. They're the ones who celebrate my wins, brush off my losses, and challenge me to be the best version of myself. They inspire me to grow, laugh often, and believe that there’s nothing I can’t do. There’s a saying, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with”. So, choose wisely. Choose those who drive you, inspire you, and push you forward. Do you have people who inspire you every day?

I Really Think That Celebrating Little Wins Is Essential! I frequently speak to individuals frustrated by slow progress in various aspects of their lives. They may feel stuck in what they perceive as a lack of progress or success, whether it's in their personal goals, professional goals, or creative pursuits. But here's what often surprises me: → They've only been working on their goals for a short time → They have goals and dreams the size of mountains → They don’t consistently put in the effort Making significant progress isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme, it's just work really. I haven't come across it not being that so fair 😅 Whenever I talk to someone feeling discouraged, I emphasise that things take time. It typically takes consistent effort over a sustained period to start seeing significant results. So I suggest: → Create smaller targets or goals to reach → This keeps you in a good mindset and headspace It's a lot harder to lose interest when you see the steps forward you are taking! Would you give up on learning to play an instrument if you weren’t a virtuoso after a few weeks? Reaching your goals, dreams, and aspirations is the same! Celebrate the small wins along the way.

🙏 Gratitude is the foundation of a fulfilled life. In business, we tend to seek success through wins... but after 10 wins, 100 wins, 1000 wins... You come to realize it's not the wins that provide satisfaction or fulfillment... that the wins aren't actually the goal, but instead, the byproduct. The real goals can be measured by the quality of the relationships made, the depth of your own self-realization, and the impact you have on helping others realize their potential. (Both personally and professionally.) Today, I want to express my gratitude to my incredible team (and teams of yore), whose creativity, curiosity, fortitude and dedication have never ceased to amaze and inspire me. (Also, man... I wish everyone know how interesting and funny these people are... literally, every day is a joy with them.) From uncertain steps to BDR of the Year: My gratitude anthem to Precisely For those who know me, self-promotion doesn't come naturally. But today, I'm bursting with gratitude and can't contain the urge to share. 5 years ago, me? Clutching a BDR of the Year award? Inconceivable! Yet, here I stand, living proof of the magic that unfolds when passion meets purpose and an extraordinary team becomes your biggest supporter and cheerleader. The unwavering support, the infectious collaborative spirit, the genuine belief in each other at Precisely – that's the fuel that propelled me beyond limits.
