Lead Talent Acquisition Partner @ Royal Caribbean Group | Empowering candidates to Job Hunt Like A Recruiter

I saw a post about someone starting a new role as a barista and I think posts like this should be celebrated! This is one of the worst job markets we’ve seen, where it’s becoming more and more common to have long term job searches for 6+ months. ANY income should be praised. We should celebrate a person doing what they can to support themselves and their families. If a hiring team sees a "gap” on a resume where a candidate did something non traditional to their role it should be viewed as a sign of adaptability and perseverance. Congratulations to all of you starting ANY role this week- it’s a HUGE accomplishment and should be celebrated. #Jobsearch #hiring #JobHuntLikeARecruiter

We have to survive before we can thrive! I’m seeing people follow their passions and break from this crazy market. Hopefully, gaps will be a concern of the past as we evolve.

Anyone working hard to provide for themselves and their family is worth celebrating! The market is hard. Well said!

I remember seeing the post being referenced and also got to witness something similar recently. I went to Walmart and overheard two employees shopping an online order. One of them was older and being trained by the other. The younger employee was making chit-chat and asking questions about his previous job. The older employee explained how he worked in a cyber security firm for 20 years, the company folded due to AI automation, he couldn't find a similar position after six months of applying, and decided to work at Walmart while attending online courses to learn UI/UX design before his severance pay ran out. Kudos to him for surviving and adapting.

I've never understood why temporary pivots to retail or food service during a job search are seen negatively with interviewers. I was told it would look like I was no longer interested in marketing if I took a job at Starbucks and no one would hire me. But it's not like we ENJOY working for poverty wages. It's not like this is a long term solution. I just didn't want to live in my car if I could avoid it.

Most people have celebration fatigue from being implored to celebrate every random positive thing that a complete stranger posts about and shows up in their feed. Celebrations are meant for special events. I'm sure it's a special event for the person who got the job, but literally thousands, maybe tens of thousands of people start a new food service position each week, and I'd rather be a little more selective about who and what I celebrate..

This is my most loved post on LinkedIn today. I couldn't agree more. Yes, you're allowed to take a little me-time after a layoff, but there are hundreds of people with amazing qualifications applying to the same jobs. Chances are Microsoft, Google, and Meta aren't going to come a-knockin anytime soon. Do something else. And my daughter's dream job is to be a barista. I haven't met one I didn't like.

Being a barista means you can multitask, you have great customer service and sales skills, you can follow highly detailed specs and instructions, you’re trainable, adaptable, flexible with your schedule, can handle conflict, and are able to deescalate and problem-solve, etc., etc., etc. I don’t know why it would ever be seen as a lowly thing on a resume. It’s a super hard job and most people wouldn’t last a day in it.

All jobs certainly warrant respect and any income should be celebrated. But even as some are experiencing long and difficult job searches, we actually have one of the best job markets ever at a 3.8% unemployment rate and with the number of new hires in March exceeding expectations (303,000 vs 200,000).
