Yesterday, Members of the ENVI Committee in the European Parliament voted the provisional deal reached with the Council on the Carbon Removals Certification Framework (CRCF). This represents a significant step towards a verifiable framework to quantify and assess carbon removals in the EU. Once ratified, the CRCF will be a crucial measure to incentivise carbon removal projects. We are looking forward to the final vote on plenary next 22 April, which will set the groundwork for the deployment of scalable and transparent solutions to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. As part of the CCS community, we are particularly encouraged by this development. The final adoption of the CRCF would send a strong signal that carbon removal is indispensable to achieving a net-zero economy. #NoNetZeroWithoutCCS

Throughout the general election, The Labour Party made their support for the Carbon Capture and Storage industry very clear within their manifesto. One of the ways they portrayed this, was through promising an additional £1bn under their National Wealth Fund. The dedication and investment into this industry, is imperative right now, as the CCUS industry is almost at the point where it could soon be deploying projects throughout the UK’s industrial heartlands at scale. The article below talks about the renewed commitment to the CCUS industry the Labour Government is bringing in. This commitment highlights how important the industry is and how integral to multiple parties it is to keep pushing this industry forwards and developing it further. 📣 Good news for our CCS supporters! In a recent position paper, CCS leader Denmark asked the European Commission to release a plan to transport trapped carbon as soon as possible and preferably in 2025. Here is what Danish policymakers called for: 1️⃣ CCUS value chain: the development of a CCUS value chain should be market-driven, with help of the EU if needed. 2️⃣ CO2 transport: the Commission should come up with a CO2-transport package in 2025. To address cross-border CO2 transport barriers, Denmark also called for the development of technical standards for CO2 transport and third-party access to all pipelines. 3️⃣ Permanent carbon removal. The Commission should integrate permanent carbon removals into the EU ETS as soon as possible. CCS Europe celebrates Denmark's long-term vision to CCS deployment and hopes to see concrete actions being taken by the Commission in the upcoming year! #NoNetZeroWithoutCCS

With so many smart (and experienced) people out there chasing industrial decarbonization, it’s a bit daunting to join a webcast with a group of genuine thought leaders to talk about #ccus and the energy from waste sector – here’s hoping I didn’t bring the average down too much 🤓!! But many thanks to Victoria Hart and the organisers at Energy from Waste, 5 - 6 March 2025 for the invite to join Charoula Melliou, Fabio Poretti, Jannicke Gerner Bjerkås, and Tom Croymans, PhD – was a great discussion (I sense we could have gone on for hours…..) and such an exciting sector to focus on as well, already home to some of the early movers (with actual FIDs taken) in this industrial #decarbonization wave in Europe right now. We covered a lot of ground in our discussion…….the over-arching value of this sector to handle non-recyclable waste, the fit it has with (and potential economics of) #carboncapture, the (unsurprising) importance of clear policy and regulatory support, and (likely one of the favourite themes of 2024) the potential to talk about classifying/tracing biogenic waste, enabling – along with #ccs – the creation of carbon removals / #CDR opportunities. This last theme is something that – through strong partnerships – the SLB and Aker Carbon Capture Joint Venture is already working on with Microsoft & Ørsted in Denmark (now signed up to purchase 3.67 million tonnes of CO2 removals over the next decade) and is also exploring in another industry (pulp & paper) in the US, along with Microsoft & CO280. And – back to first principles – we’re always happy to talk about this industry and #ccus, as it’s a 'good fit' for our #carboncapture approach – a good size fit with the modular Just Catch™ plants, help from the availability of ‘excess heat’, and (as noted above) the potential to capture CO2 from biogenic waste and generate carbon removals)….genuine ‘early mover material’, as noted before 😎 #decarbonization #ccs #ccus #energytransition PS – just in case you’re in need of weekend reading material on taking CO2 out of the Energy from Waste industry; back in May (22nd), Hasan M.’s team at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies put out a 30-ish page piece looking at decarbonizing this sector in the UK, particularly topics like the opportunity from negative removals, and the challenges from policy (eg: non pipeline transport).

Driving sustainable innovations in energy with expertise in offshore (hydrogen), nuclear and CCUS | Thought Leader, Lecturer, Speaker, and Engineer at Bureau Veritas | Scientist for sustainability, and circularity.
Our CEN and CENELEC TC 474 meeting in Brussels was very important! The people were all passionate about our mutual goal to standardise the #ccus aspects in Europe. #carboncapture is needed as interbellum between fossil and getting to zero emitting renewable energy. we would like to thank Carolina Müller, PhD of CEN and CENELEC and our newly voted chair Adriaan den Herder of Gasunie! Also a big thanks to NEN, specifically Koen Kobes and Britta van der Zanden. Our head of delegation and member of the national representative Murat Kilic and Gloria Thürschmid. Last mange tak for the Danish Standard representative Brian Larsen, looking forward that Bureau Veritas Denmark and DS work together on themes such as #carbonfootprint, #carboncapture, #carbontransport #co2pipelines and most important for #carbonutilisation! The near future, we need to replace our hydrocarbons with an alternative. In Denmark, #greenmethanol was already chosen for shipping. Also in the chemical industry located in Frederica and Kalundborg, renewable carbon is needed. Would it be nice utilise direct the #co2valuestream as #co2feedstock? So #hydrogen and #renewablecarbon or #reusedcarbon is the answer to mitigate the #climatechange. By #ccus we can make in Europe big steps in realising our #climategoals. We are looking forward to have harmonised approaches in Europe to make a #CO2backbone possible and have an interoperable network in place. Also to stimulate CO2 transport for #permanentgeologicalstorage and #carbonutilisiation. This could be for #directCO2injection by seagoing vessels, #co2inlandvessels or #co2tanktransport by truck or rail. #CO2transport can be in #liquidCO2 or #denseCO2 phases. Let us as Bureau Veritas Group support you and the society to make #ccus possible on a very short notice and make in largely available to all industries, including #bluehydrogen factories.
This week the birth of the standardisation committee TC 474 at CEN on Carbon dioxide capture, storage, transport and utilisation (CCUS) was a fact. Bureau Veritas had the expert, Pim Reuderink, attending the meeting in Brussels. He has contributed on the scoping of the committee. He was delighted to work with other European experts that were very passionate on CCS and CCU. CCUS is swiftly needed to mitigate the climate change. This initiative by standardisation is very welcome to accelerate the CCUS implementation in EUROPE. #NEN #CCS #CCUS Bureau Veritas Denmark Bureau Veritas Benelux #Carboncapture #CO2 #CO2Pipelines

Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) plays a key role in reducing landfill use and helps heavy industries cut carbon emissions. Its market is expected to expand from £3.75 billion in 2022 to £4.74 billion by 2029, partly due to the influence of the EU's Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). The ETS, which charges European energy and manufacturing sectors for their emissions, pushes for annual reductions to meet the EU's climate goals. However, SRF stands out as it offers a cost-effective alternative to other fuels, sparking increased interest for its environmental and economic benefits.
