Another post on coins, and the different approaches to monarchs’ effigies – even when two countries share the same monarch! The convention for UK circulating coins is that the monarch’s effigy can appear on coins up to the end of the calendar year of the monarch’s demise. So for Queen Elizabeth II, no circulating coins bearing her effigy as head of state could be minted and issued from 2023 onwards. The convention for Canadian coins is different (or at least this is what I understood when in Ottawa - Royal Canadian Mint colleagues do correct me if I am wrong!). In Canada coins showing the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II continued to be minted into 2023. Another key difference to UK coins is that the Canadian 2023 coins included dates of her reign (1952-2022) added under the effigy – see example of the 1 Canadian Dollar coin in the photo. You will also see a small symbol between the dates, made up of four dots, on the obverse of the coin. When Queen Elizabeth died, many people asked how our daily life would change. "Stuff" noted that Queen’s Counsel would need to become King’s Counsel, coins with pictures of the Queen would slowly be replaced and passports would bear the name of the new King. But one thing that won’t change is the Queen’s Chain. That’s because, legally, it doesn't exist. The term Queen’s Chain stems from a myth that among Queen Victoria's instructions to New Zealand Governor William Hobson in 1840 were orders to reserve such strips around the whole coast, lakes and rivers. The Queen’s Chain is a shorthand term for public access that exists alongside waterways and the coast. However, not all aways and lakes, and not all the coast is bordered by public access. ‘The Queen’s Chain’ is not universal or unbroken. Some rivers have public land on one side but not on the other. Some have no public access on either side, and some have gaps in public access along portions of the river. If the river is owned by the Crown, then you're generally free to stand in it. There's not an automatic right of public access, but, so long as your public access is not in conflict with some other Crown use (such as a hydroelectric dam), then the Crown doesn’t mind you getting your feet wet or in this case take 101 flight as long as your clear of airports.
