A big shoutout to Cecelia C. Henry (CeCe). Outside her role as the Scientific Diversity Advisor for the NIH Clinical Center, CeCe is a member of Patrick Lundy and the Ministers of Music. ‘History, like music, is not something that happens — it’s something you make.’ Advice from a 100 year old school teacher whose only son helped transform a genre of music. 30 years ago, Rage Against The Machine opened the eyes and minds of a generation with their self-titled album. On its cover, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk in-flames, protesting government religious oppression. Last week one of the most influential / controversial / empowering music groups to have ever walked the planet was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Listen and you'll find their music, lyrics, and ultimately their message pulls open a corner of the curtain to shed light on how ‘the machine’ works. Inspiring audiences to reflect on the politics, propaganda, and powers that shape society and in turn, take action against their injustices. Art has a way of penetrating borders. Music has a way of singing what can’t be said. If you can’t identify with their music or appreciate Tom Morello's guitar, at least take his moms advice. Or listen to his. Notes from his acceptance speech: 1️⃣ Dream big and don’t settle. 2️⃣ Aim for the world you really want — without compromise or apology. 3️⃣ Don’t wait for someone else. They’re not here, but you are. + If you’re an employee, join a union. + If you’re an anarchist, grab a brick. + And if you're a soldier, follow your conscience, not your order. #designforgood #rockandrollhalloffame

Curious how we use data in our concerts? 🤓🎶 We are able to analyze which popular artists in key locations, whose electoral margins are often decided by the size of a concert venue, will increase civic impact the most. To learn more check out this video where Emily White discusses our findings via SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University, moderated by Megan Ihnen! Shoutout to everyone who helped make this project happen including Eliza O'Reilly, Jasmine Lafita, Tomoya Furutani, #EmiHakutani, & Jackson Shapiro!! 🙌

The word of the day is hwyl. During early August (5 to 12), the National Eisteddfod inspires a celebration of culture, language and community. The Welsh festival has taken place nearly every year since 1861, with some exceptions eg First World War and the coronavirus pandemic necessitated its postponement. It is one of the nation’s richest showcases of music, dance, performance, song and visual art, and with it comes an emotion for which Welsh uniquely has a word: hwyl. Hwyl is defined in the dictionary as ‘an emotional quality that inspires and sustains impassioned eloquence’ as well as ‘the fervour of emotion characteristic of gathering of Welsh people.’ In Welsh the word more often refers to an intangible quality, conveying a sense of belonging and home, of mood and passion. In this it is akin to another Welsh term: hiraeth, the longing for home, and all that belongs there.
