Researchers examined doctors’ preference for newer antibiotics over traditional generic agents to shed light on the decision-making processes among clinicians when treating patients with bloodstream infections caused by gram-negative bacteria and significant co-morbidities. The study revealed that a considerable number of hospitals were reluctant to adopt newer antibiotics. Full Article: https://bit.ly/3VV0sBP

The overuse of antibiotics is a critical issue as we grapple with the rapid spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and rightly so. AMR is an urgent problem that makes the treatment of infections more difficult and everyday medical procedures riskier. Global collaboration based on evidence-based policies and research is the way forward to reduce overuse and misuse globally.

Prophylactic antibiotics are often used inappropriately. In 2021, the Surgical National Antimicrobial Prescribing Survey showed that 57.2% of audited antibiotic doses for #prophylaxis after a surgical procedure were not compliant with guidelines. As a consumer and recent (4 times in the last 12 months) user of our acute health system this stat astounds me. It makes me think "where else are there mistakes and what are the consequences?" I'm certain there are many causes, probably reasonable explanations and plenty of fixes being discussed. And maybe one fix is clinical governance training. Not so you can fix one issue. But to help fix many issues. Including things you don't even know about. How? By making the problems and solutions "my responsibility" and then empowering my to identify, report, fix and update.

"Antibiotic overuse is common, costly and harmful." This is where Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASPs) come into play. They seek to optimize antibiotic use. A huge factor in this is diagnostic testing to properly diagnose patients. From here, we are introduced to Diagnostic Stewardship strategies that work to improve the use of diagnostic tests and performance. Though different in many factors, the two can play a huge role in improving the accuracy of testing, prescribing and overall patient care. Cambridge University Press speaks to this distinct and complementary relationship: https://bit.ly/3tZ3vON

Why are urinary tract infections (UTIs) sometimes considered a strong driver of antimicrobial resistance (AMR)❔❔ UTIs are a major burden on healthcare systems, but urine cultures can take up to three days to complete, and up to 80% of samples turn out to be negative. Antibiotics are drugs used to treat infections caused by bacteria. They work by killing bacteria or inhibiting their growth. There are various classes of antibiotics, each targeting specific types of bacteria and mechanisms of action. Prompt and effective treatment is crucial in sepsis for survival and minimizing complications. Timely administration of antibiotics is critical in managing sepsis. Delays in treatment are associated with higher mortality rates. Clinical guidelines recommend administering broad-spectrum antibiotics within the first hour of recognizing sepsis. #Sepsissurvival #Survivalsepsiscompaign #SCCM #CriticalCarenursing #ICUNURSE #Criticalcaresecretes
