Early-Stage Venture

There’s a tiny founder pool responsible for 23 unicorns ($60B market cap) in the current cohort. You’d think an army of VCs covers them, yet they’re almost wholly ignored. The best part—you can know them all well before company creation. This is great. There probably are specific quant roles you could filter for to limit the universe. The average analytical/mathematical/IQ bar for _anyone_ working at a top tier hedge fund is relatively high -- so what you probably want is someone responsible for connecting the math to the real world: as this requires a lot of commercial acumen mixed with technical understanding. At traditional quant shops, these would be the alpha signal groups. At multi-managers with quant pods, this would probably be the PMs or associate PMs themselves. At prop shops, this could be the actual traders themselves (ie. the Jane Street guy that figures out there are two similar-enough ETFs, etc.). Across all quant funds, people responsible for resource allocations (strategy, coo, etc) are probably also amazing candidates.

Really cool, just went through the tracker. Would be interesting to see what role each co-founder had from day zero (did they discover the problem, were they the technical pair to the person who discovered the problem, etc.). Thinking along the lines of, did they experience the problem themselves and have the passion to solve it or were they the person that helped solve a problem their friend/peer experienced? For the executive levels, I'm assuming they weren't the founders but have become CEO/CFO later on?

Read it and agree there is greater room for the quant in the world of finance and technology. I am an older student in the realm after a career in MBA-Finance in traditional realm of Wall Street in private equity. I remember when I want to feed excel models with monte carlo simulations back in early 200s for certain variables. Got shot down. Stick to basic, Best, Worst, and Most likely very basic statistical models. Finance has come a long way and there is new knowledge to harness just like it has been since the first quants showed up on Wall Street around 1984 and their predecessors of Applied Mathematics of the last 1960s and 1970s like Merton, Fisher Black and Myron Scholes and others who brought mathematical modelling to finance from applied mathematics.

I've had this exact thesis for a while after noticing the trend. Interested to know how one can incentives leaving a quant fund for startups with the financial upside is clearly better at the fund.
