Today is my last day at IBM and no, you weren’t lost in a time warp and it’s still 2024. Firstly, I want to thank Catherine Lian and Chee Kin Ng for the opportunity to re-join IBM after being away for 20+ years. Some of you would have heard me publicly credit my professional foundation to my early years at IBM via the Team Blue program. It was such a privilege to be able to go back to such an institution again.   This short stint has given me the opportunity to see the huge transformation IBM has gone through and it is again in motion to reinvent itself to move from a direct-sale model to a channel-led model. The Chairman and CEO of IBM has publicly announced that IBM is to double its channel-led revenue to 80% within 24 months, and for some markets, to be exclusively channel-led. This is by no means a simple feat as IBM is well known for its direct customer engagement model all this while. This was a big challenge for me to take up as the Ecosystem Leader leads this transformation not just by rebuilding the channel ecosystem, but also remodelling the IBM sellers and the rest of IBM to be all-in with the channel. So why did I leave? Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to pursue a parallel track to my full-time employment in the areas of angel investing (newbie) and also advise and coach founders of local tech companies. It’s something I am passionate about and have made commitments to. Once I had the opportunity to deep dive into the policies and employee guidelines, it was clear that there are misalignments with my personal passion and external commitments with IBM policies. After a long discussion with my management, we determined that parting ways is the best option and mutually agreed on the quick timeline. I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to all my new colleagues and team members, some of whom are familiar faces, for the warm welcome and onboarding this past week. My Perspective: A Journey of Sacrifice and Growth 🌟 Looking for a job sometimes requires sacrifice. When I decided to join IBM, I faced a significant pay cut. It wasn't an easy decision, but I was determined to learn from one of the best companies in the world. The journey wasn't always smooth, but the lessons were invaluable. IBM taught me that when a company is process-oriented, it can thrive even when its best people move on. To some, adhering to processes might seem troublesome, but to me, it's fascinating. It’s a testament to a company's strength and resilience. My time at IBM was transformative, and I am proud to say my blood runs blue with the knowledge and experiences I gained there. 🌟 Career Journey Alert! 🌟 Happy Monday to my IBM Z Connections, I wanted to share a personal milestone in my career journey that has truly transformed my professional life. Having predominantly been in consultancy roles with zero background in IT, I took a leap of faith when I applied for the role as a z/OS Systems Programmer at a large financial institution just over 6 years ago. Fortunately for me the primary criteria at the time was having the right aptitude and attitude, with no experience in an effort to help with succession planning to plug growing retirment risk and test out the teams ability to upskill someone from scratch. For me, it was a bold step into the unknown that came with a great deal of anxiety and concern with the understanding that an overwhelming majority of my peers within the industry came either from careers in operational support roles or other very similar technologies, never the less I was driven by a deep desire for change and growth. The transition into the realm of IBM Z was a challenge I eagerly embraced. Initially daunting, it quickly became an exhilarating journey of learning, growth, and pushing my boundaries. The platform's complexity and innovation inspired me to adapt, learn, and evolve in ways I hadn't imagined. Embracing this new role not only expanded my skill set but also opened doors to a world of opportunities and connections within the IBM Z community. I found a passion for the intricate systems and a newfound appreciation for the power and reliability of z/OS. Now settling very happily into my new home @Vertali and reflecting back, taking that leap was undoubtedly one of the best decisions of my career. The support and camaraderie within the IBM Z community has been instrumental in my growth, and I'm immensely grateful for this transformative experience. To anyone considering a change or contemplating stepping into the world of IBM Z without prior IT experience – trust me, it’s possible and it's worth it. Embrace the challenge, be open to learning, and seize the opportunities that come your way.
