I’m still living the many impressive #IWD events from last week. Each one was special - here’s my write-up on the one delivered by the fab team at Accenture. “I may not know how to change a SIM card but I do know how to cook a biriani.” A quote of many said by the “Queen of Chess” Asma Khan, at Accenture’s International Women's Day 2024 which took place last week at the impressive Roundhouse. At 45 years old she was in for the second innings she said, and what an inspiring one it’s been! She has made strides in #genderbalance and #equality. She runs an all-woman kitchen and to her ALL are equal as each has an essential role to play if her business is to survive. I was blown away. And there were many others who were similarly beyond impressive such as Shaheen Sayed, Country Managing Director, Accenture U.K. Ireland and Africa who said there were 3 things we need to understand in the current climate if we are to create social impact: 👉🏾 “Progress is not a victory march - what is hard fought for is easily lost.” She said women need to continue being impatient and to strive to be part of big conversations so we are part of the driving team for change. 👉🏾 “It’s the transition that’s troublesome.. and it may hit women harder.“ She underlined the importance of addressing the skills gap - especially as it is women without degrees who number more at entry level. 👉🏾 “Write the source code for the future.” She emphasised: we need women coders, designers in training and building if we are to be in the front row and have a say. Determined to find my true calling, I set my sights on the finance sector within IT. Despite facing rejection after joining a company with no vacancies in my desired field, I refused to be discouraged. My perseverance paid off when I secured a role as a market research analyst at TCS. Yet, just as I found my footing, motherhood beckoned, and I chose to prioritize raising my child for the next four years. Upon reentering the workforce, I found myself at a crossroads. Armed with a newfound determination, I delved into the world of analytics, seizing every opportunity to enhance my skills through free courses. Today, as a Data Analyst at Corestack, my journey serves as a testament to the resilience and tenacity of women who refuse to be defined by circumstances. Through every twist and turn, I embraced the challenges, emerging stronger and more determined than ever before. “The best part…is bringing people together.” I so agree, Cristina Y. Zamora! I love to see people connect and share and innovate and do incredible things. In fact, I would say it’s the best part of my job too - my life, even! And it’s especially amazing when those people are from a wide variety of different backgrounds…then the sparks really fly. We may have to work harder to connect, to see other people’s point of view, but we learn. So as it’s International Women’s Day, I’d like to celebrate everyone at Sanofi who helps women to grow, to make the most of their talents, to discover their extraordinary. Thanks to your hard work, we have more women leaders than ever. And we’re closing in on our goal of gender balance among our senior leaders. But we still have a way to go here at Sanofi and in societies all over the world. *Why is it so hard?* I think what’s often missing is the personal motive for change, the ‘why’. So here’s my ask. When you come up against personal bias, put yourself in that person’s shoes. Not always easy, I know! But as you think about them, try to figure this out: **How will a more diverse, inclusive and equitable world benefit you personally?** The benefits might not come immediately. Maybe they’ll lose out before they gain. But if we can make the personal benefit clear, then they’re more likely to get onboard. I’ve seen that time and again. Last night I was thrilled to participate in an epic discussion with Nayab M, Gareema Kaaushik, Meenakshee Behera, and other amazing members of the MENA Women Product Managers Guild, where stories about navigating some of the unique challenges women in product management in the MENA region often face were openly shared. Here are some of the key takeaways from the discussion: 💡 Arm yourself with "the right" data before entering any career-related negotiation 💡 Be confident in the value you bring and be prepared to walk away if you're not OK with being devalued (which should be the case...) 💡 There are effective, tactical techniques for common professional challenges we face (like getting a seat at the table or having a successful salary discussion with your manager) 💡 A great way to counter imposter syndrome is to bask in your credible authenticity by recognizing the confidence of real imposters (those with inflated titles despite minimal experience in your field of expertise) #wpmg #womenintech
