Congratulations to our very own Jin Jun, PhD from our Center for Healthy Aging, Self-Management and Complex Care for being chosen for the 2023 cohort of Health Disparities Research Institute scholars through the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD)! NIMHD works to eliminate health disparities and improve outcomes by investing in research and partnerships that support data-informed science. The agency has increased the scientific community’s focus on non-biological factors such as socioeconomics, politics, discrimination, culture and environment in relation to health disparities. _ One of the goals of Dr. Jun’s research is to examine the health and well-being of the healthcare workforce, which is mission critical in improving the quality and safety of healthcare delivery. She also is interested in exploring work as a social determinant of health among low-wage healthcare workers. We're making exciting strides in Maine to bridge the gap between research and clinical practice, particularly in rural areas where access to timely evidence is challenging. Dr. Elizabeth Jacobs and Lisbeth Balligan are leading a two-year project, funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, to build research dissemination capacity. The focus is on creating an infrastructure for sharing patient-centered outcomes research, initially targeting behavioral health and opioid use disorder treatment. With a Research Dissemination Advisory Panel guiding the effort, the project aims to provide easier access to evidence for rural healthcare organizations, reducing the average 17-year timeline for implementation. This initiative holds the promise of fostering more equitable access to the latest research, thereby addressing rural health disparities in Maine: https://bit.ly/4bHua4a #HealthcareInnovation #RuralHealthcare

Health disparity continuum #ISPORAnnual 2024 Happy to meet a wonderful colleague and health equity mentee of Omolola (Lola) Adeoye-Olatunde, PharmD, MS, at #ISPORAnnual 2024. Prajakta Waghmare and Dr Omolola (Lola) Adeoye-Olatunde, PharmD, MS have collaborated to publish a work on disparities in medicare beneficiaries' receiving medication synchronization where it was highlighted that there is a need to expand Med-Sync program enrollment to address health disparities and advance health equity in the United States. Implicit bias, barriers to care, chronic stress, medical racism - the potential drivers of the appalling racial gaps in maternal mortality and morbidity are complex. Yet rigorous research disentangling the socioeconomic, environmental, physiological and systemic factors remains glaringly underfunded. This is more than just a women's health issue - it is a moral crisis shaped by systemic racism impacting families and entire communities. We have an ethical duty to dedicate serious academic resources towards understanding and eliminating these maternal health inequities. Researchers from diverse backgrounds must spearhead community-engaged studies examining every aspect of this alarming problem. Pinpointing shortfalls, testing solutions, and guiding evidence-based policies to ensure truly equitable, empowering maternal care requires comprehensive data.
Are you a women’s health researcher? Do you want to protect Black and Brown maternal health through and with research? If you answered yes (As you should)! 👌 💡 Then check out the Public Health Critical Race Praxis (PHCR), which will help you design a health equity-focused research. As you can see in the diagram, all four focuses (phases) within the PHCR are comprehensive and incorporate existing frameworks, addressing health inequities from a macro and micro perspective. Amongst other obvious benefits, PHCR helps researchers measure and conceptualize racism's effect on health outcomes. This is critical because research plays a chief role in either perpetuating or eliminating racism and bias. With persistent historical and contemporary racial health inequities leading to increased maternal mortality and morbidity, the PCHR is an important tool for every researcher in this field. On a personal note, I used the PHCR to develop three independent research projects (https://lnkd.in/g5wvupi9). I can confidently speak to its influence in increasing my consciousness and awareness of health equity research. Have you used or heard about the PHCR? I’m curious to hear your thoughts. Meanwhile, you can access the article outlining the PHCR below: https://lnkd.in/g8TeAYhQ #blackmaternalhealth #research #healthequity #blackhistorymonth #womenshealth

🌟 In honor of National Minority Health Month 2024, let's advocate for better health outcomes for all communities! ----> 🔍 It's crucial to address disparities highlighted in recent articles like this one from Diabetes UK, shedding light on inaccuracies in type 2 diabetes tests for South Asian individuals. Link to article: https://lnkd.in/dEGsB2ZA 💡 By coupling this awareness with research tools that prioritize diversity, as emphasized in our white paper on "Highlighting Human Diversity in In Vitro Preclinical Models," we can advocate for healthcare solutions that encompass all. Read here: https://lnkd.in/dMRJquQV 🚀 Let's leverage knowledge and action to ensure equitable access to accurate diagnostics and personalized treatments, ultimately improving health outcomes for minority populations. 📚 Learn more about #NMHM24 with U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) : https://lnkd.in/dK-fmjkd #HealthEquity #DiversityInHealthcare #SourceForBetterHealth #MinorityHealth

With the announcement of Healthcare Rewards to Achieve Improved Outcomes (HEROES), Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) is set to complement model testing at the CMS Innovation Center (CMMI) with accelerators that reward population health efforts showing improved outcomes for: Maternal health Cardiovascular disease Opioid overdoses Alcohol health harms "...lack of funding focused on population-wide health improvement has led to a dependence on grant-based, often unsustainable funding for community-based interventions..." While you can't just throw $ at problems, we haven't seen as much progress as we would like in pop health with other approaches including venture capital! I hope the awards go to worthy accelerator participants that actually make a difference. Support includes a technical platform with https://lnkd.in/emjbntmg
