National Science Foundation NSF and NIJ announce supplemental funding for graduate student internships in forensic science and criminal justice The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) have announced a new effort to strengthen the STEM workforce and support research relevant to criminal justice. We are inviting proposals under the NSF-NIJ INTERN program (INTERN), which allows graduate students to explore non-academic research internships in forensic science and other criminal justice fields. INTERN offers students experiential training in professional environments broader than would be typical in an academic program. At the same time, it gives potential employers access to future STEM workforce talent. This represents the latest collaboration between NIJ and NSF since renewing a Memorandum of Understanding in 2020. Students must already be associated with an NSF grant, as INTERN awards are supplemental funding to existing NSF grants. We encourage interested students and their principal investigators to communicate with a potential host institution and discuss submitting a supplemental proposal with their NSF program officer. Details about this supplemental funding opportunity are published in the Dear Colleague Letter: Graduate Research Internships in Forensic Science and Criminal Justice Contexts (NSF-NIJ INTERN) Supplemental Funding Opportunity. Internship host sites can be industry, government, or non-profit institutions with forensic science or other criminal justice missions. Review a list of institutions already expressing an interest in hosting an NSF-NIJ INTERN. If your organization is interested in hosting an NSF-NIJ INTERN, contact [email protected] to be added to this list. #internships #forensicscience #college #students #student #criminaljustice https://lnkd.in/gczXEZAx

According to the National Institutes of Health, "School-based programs are positively associated with stable employment and full-time work while work-based programs most consistently increase the likelihood that youth with disabilities will be employed in jobs that provide fringe benefits. Analyses also indicate that – once individuals with disabilities are stably employed – they can be employed in “good” jobs that provide employee benefits." The Transition Academy put this research into action by partnering with Diversity Placement Services and Central High School to provide summer jobs for students at Central High School, Hogan Preparatory Academy and the Kauffman School. For 71% of the hard working youth, it was their first job. We look forward to building upon this pilot program and ensuring students get real world experience to prepare them for employment success. #specialeducation #disabilityemployment #realworldlearning #careerpathways
Congrats to TTA student Raynell for completing his last day of his summer job program today. He and several other Diversity Placement Services youth had a great summer working at Central High getting the school ready for students in a few more weeks. Research shows youth who have a summer work experience are more likely to succeed after graduating high school. We're so happy to have a role in helping students succeed in life. #DisabilityEmployment #DisabilityInclusion

Empowering the Next Generation | Bridging Opportunity Gaps | Scaling Organizations | Finding Actionable Insights
Thanks Aurora Hoffman for pulling this data together and writing a great article for LaunchPoint! There's most definitely a disconnect between the college curriculum and specific skills needed in the workforce that would give recent graduates the confidence they need to #succeed. Ensuring the college experience also includes #professionallearning opportunities is the key to mitigating the mounting anxiety students feel as they transition beyond academia. #internships #professionaldevelopment #futureofwork

You just graduated! Now What? Well, first off, congratulations! Secondly, cue the existential crisis, jk jk...kinda. 👀 I'm not here to sugarcoat things; post-grad can be a confusing time filled with new beginnings: new jobs, big moves, and lots of "what the heck am I doing?" And yet, it can be one of the most exciting times. You get to decide your future—to create it. How crazy is that? Even so, it can be overwhelming, so I thought I'd try to take some of the burden off. Here's everything you need to know (or at least a start) at your next phase of adulting. Externships, get your career focused on the path of your own choosing.
