The economic and security of supply case for interconnection has always been clear - with differing demand habits across different time zones it's perhaps more obvious how interconnection with other grid systems makes economic sense. The environmental case less so. This is an insightful listen if you want to find out more about the strategic importance of interconnection in advancing decarbonisation. Increasing the ability for us to mutually share surplus renewable energy reduces our longer term reliance on hydro-carbon sources of power.

The direct current (DC) connection EstLink 2 between Finland and Estonia has been disconnected from the network. The grid company Fingrid announced the disconnection early on Friday (26 Jan 2024). ⚡ Streaming flexibility to the power system Our colleague JAYASIMHA BAGALKOTE is currently in Espoo, Finland! The partners of the EU funded project are reunited for the STREAM 3rd General Meeting. This opportunity is used to exchange key findings; present the work that has been done so far as well as the milestones; identify the strong points; and state the plans and kick-off activities. The main objective of the STREAM project is to create an innovative and robust flexibility ecosystem on the low voltage grid side of existing power markets. It connects data, technologies, stakeholders and markets, thus facilitating flexibility provision. 🏗 We are starting the construcion of the new 330 kV Vilnius-Neris power transmission line. 🔗The new 81 km long overhead line, together with the existing 330 kV lines Lietuvos elektrinė-Vilnius and Lietuvos elektrinė-Neris, will create of 330 kV power transmission lines ring around the capital. It will ensure reliable electricity supply in the Vilnius region, increase the stability of the electricity grid, and enable further development of the city and its district.     💡The construction of the Vilnius-Neris power line is taking place in preparation for the synchronisation with the continental European grids. Today JTF Chair Bruce Howe had the pleasure to visit and tour ASN - Calais. Here submarine telecom cable is made, integrated with repeaters, and loaded on ships for deployment. Sounds simple, but it is a very complicated process requiring meticulous design and attention to detail with end-to-end quality control. The physical plant is impressive, all reflecting 150 years of accumulated expertise and practical wisdom. It will be here that the first two #SMART #cable #systems will be fabricated and assembled (with SMART Climate Change nodes from ASN Greenwich) in 2026, for the #TAMTAM system connecting #Vanuatu and #NewCaledonia, and the #Portuguese #NewCAM Ring connecting the Continent/Lisbon, Azores, and Madeira.
