Beware the seductive narratives of repair. The Kunstsilo, an ambitious transformation of the Odderøya grain silo has opened in Norway's Kristiansand. It seems like a dream project – a wealthy patron generously funding the conversion of a striking harbour side industrial relic into a cultural venue for the public, but all is not quite as it seems. Oliver Wainwright's (excellent as ever) coverage in the Guardian reveals a more complex picture. A former hedge fund manager refusing to cough up in full for a project to house his personal art collection out of some paternalist impulse that the public purse must take the hit: '“I could have paid for the whole museum,” Tangen says, “but then it would not have been a gift. For something to be taken care of, people need to participate in the initial investment. If you get a kitten for free, you will look after it less than if you have to pay £10.”' Later in the piece Wainwright (who also took the first photo in this post) digs into claims that the congestion represents and ecological example of reuse: 'For all their claims of “adaptive reuse”, both projects are also heavily rebuilt. It turns out that ageing concrete silos are not actually capable of being sawn and sliced quite as much as architects might hope. As in Cape Town, the Kristiansand structure had to have a 250mm-thick sleeve of concrete cast around the existing 150mm-thick cylinders, as well as an additional lattice of concrete beams threaded through the tubes to stabilise the structure... ...No embodied carbon assessment has been carried out, but the environmental argument of “reusing” the building in this way, when such a substantial amount of new concrete had to be poured, is questionable' It would be uncharitable to denounce the project. It looks like a remarkable accomplishment and has just about saved a chunk of heritage from the wrecking ball of time, but given the smoke and mirrors swirling around it's ecological claims, is the Kunstsilo truly an act of repair or just a sexy bauble? https://lnkd.in/ezHH5HJZ

Our proposal for the new future of Refshaleøen in Copenhagen suggests a premise as a masterplan. Refshaleøen is a rare gem - an area shaped by sustained industrial forces that has created an opportunity for creative enterprise and allowed a special cultural environment to flourish. The premise of our proposal is to preserve the creative identity from shipyard to modern cultural force as a diver for the masterplan. Instead of guidelines and massing models, a promise of incentives preserves and maintain the conditions that enable a creative cultural quarter to succeed such as; low rent, open access, room variety, shared facilities, 'the third space', character, etc. Hereby, Refshaleøen is developed based on a promise to protect and strengthen the cultural and creative heritage that is already sprouting on the site and which is difficult to recreate in a new district. #people #promise #planet #esg #creative #entrepreneurship Udviklingsselskabet By & Havn Galmstrup Architects

#IdiazabalSilo is based on the enhancement of the pre-existing buildings and the articulation with the surrounding agricultural environment and with the Green Belt of Vitoria-Gasteiz. The project focuses on the conservation, consolidation and reuse of the existing architecture. HasleTre is awarded a Honorable Mention at The City of Oslo´s Architecture award. Excerpt from Jørgen Tycho's acceptance speech on behalf of Oslotre AS, our clients Höegh Eiendom AS, AF Eiendom and the tenants Save the Children Norway: HasleTre is built for reusability, where all the components in the building are intended to have the highest possible second-hand value when they are removed from the building. Through HasleTre, we have made a massive leap in knowledge. We have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 60% and achieved an 80% reduction in steel used in the building. We have eliminated the need for plastic, silicone, and building foam. Above ground, there is not a single gram of concrete. It's a building made of natural materials that sequester CO2 instead of emitting it during production. Additionally, the materials are regenerative, which means we will never run out of them if we manage our forests responsibly. It's a circular way of thinking, much like how nature functions. In nature, there's no such thing as waste. Everything has a utility. This mindset needs to return to architecture and society to address the challenges of this century, such as climate change and biodiversity loss. We need to move away from the building practices of the previous century and the linear use-and-discard mentality. To bring about this change, we need forward-thinking property developers and clients, like Höegh and AF Eiendom, who have taken the lead in this project. However, individual projects are not enough if we are to achieve a green transition. We need to make fundamental changes in how we build and think, and this needs to happen relatively quickly. If you ask me about Ukrainian architecture, I would describe it as a combination of some 1,000-year-old buildings, the majority of buildings built during the last 80 years, and a small fraction of constructions that survived WWI and WWII. There was no option to choose which housing you would live in. Fast solutions dominated. Comfort, energy efficiency, and sustainability were never key focuses before. I believe the Living Places concept and the Children Living Places project in Ukraine are strong moves to show that rebuilding can be comfortable, sustainable, and beneficial to nature, society, and the people living in it. Such houses can be built even in the current Ukrainian reality. I know cost matters! I'm very excited that affordability and scalability are essential parts of the Living Places concept. If these buildings were long & narrow, and laid out in N-S orientation, plus up higher than the tree canopy, then it would be similar to my building/transport concept that will restore forests back to the Earth's surface. They DO PROVE that it can be done. A Site LayUP, rather than a Site LayOUT - which needs to end & be reversed with ReForestation underneath. Mine would not use stairs, but my invention instead, so you would ascend, descend, and even go sideways, in cellphone-actuated, cheap, safe, pole-mounted "elevators" via my Patent, which does so in a HIGHLY energy-efficient manner. This building is in Spain. Perhaps someday I'll be able to afford to go see it.

If you want to know how people from a country are, look at their architecture. “Ludwig Mies van der Rohe” This is probably my favorite sentence of all time. It is very simple, but yes, we do what we are. If we look at Helsinki’s architecture, we can see a few things that a good observer will notice: - Straight lines (definitely not a curvy city) - Robust buildings (Materials like granite are predominant) - Organization - Soft colors and transitions Now we can ask ourselves: - In case of Finland, how does the Finnish language feel? Straight, robust, organized, and slightly shy. See the point? The farther you go from Helsinki, the bigger the difference. As the houses are more isolated, people are also less communicative.
