📖 WEEKEND READING: PLAYBOOK ON BUILDING AND SCALING CLIMATE HARDWARE 📖 Scaling cleantech companies can be quite the undertaking. Luckily, the cleantech community is a tight knit crew of supportive experts, keen on sharing their insights and experiences. Earlier this week, Cleantech for Europe's investor coalition member Planet A Ventures published a playbook in collaboration with Norrsken VC and Speedinvest, providing a recipe on how to scale and deploy climate hardware. The playbook features insightful chapters on the challenges that early-stage climate startups face. Topics covered include how to find the right financing mix to scale quickly, to build an impactful team, the cleantech capital stack, IP and patents and more! Understanding the world of policy is crucial for cleantech innovators, and the tools available to decision makers range from standards to direct technology mandates, all of which have profound impact on the cleantech market. For 11 years, early-stage founders have applied to pitch their businesses at our annual climate tech event, VERGE. Among the themes that stand out in 2023: While most activity is still in energy, followed by carbon, there is increasing diversity of ideas in buildings (biosolar roofs, materials that sequester carbon) and food (seaweed, coffee) as well as founder mix (42% BIPOC, 32% non-male). Great post from Tim De Chant covering the problems promising climate tech companies have crossing what the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) calls "the bridge to bankability". The folks at Energy Transition Finance LLC have made it their business to help companies get the non-dilutive resources they need from federal, state, and local governments and non-profits to ensure that the best climate projects can have the greatest impact and scale.
