I'm sharing this in hopes of generating some real discussion, especially because I have a lot of respect for Korn Ferry as thought leaders and intelligent purveyors of helpful information (even though I find this title a little click-baity). As a teacher, my job was absolutely integral to my identity. I prided myself on my job - really, my vocation - and I still feel like it's at the core of who I am. Even though I'm not a classroom teacher, I'm still passionate about education. It took real, actual, emotional labor to process the separation of my job from my identity. As an L&D professional, I find a lot of enjoyment and fulfillment in my job. I actually enjoy coming to work most days, I have a great team, and I feel highly motivated to perform well. I see the value in what I do and it's exciting to be part of making a positive impact on how other people perform their jobs. However, it's not a core part of my identity. It's what I do for 40-odd hours a week. Who I am informs what I do, but what I do does not make up who I am. And to be entirely honest, that dichotomy, that separation, has made me into a healthier, happier, and more balanced person (just ask my husband and kids). I am much more than my job title, and I'm lucky that my role allows me to find fulfillment in my work AND balance in my personal life. So the question is...should employers be trying to create roles that become people's identities? Or should we, as a society, adjust our expectations around work to create a healthier workforce and more supported families? https://lnkd.in/ex43gDMT?

In what ways can organisations do more to acknowledge and support the evolving needs and self-awareness of their employees? 💁🏻♂️ Employees are people, not just workers. 💼 Work is a component of life, not isolated from it. 🙌🏼 Value comes from emotional connections, not just product attributes. Organisations must understand that compensation isn't everything; emotional value and making a difference are crucial. The intent to leave or stay in a job is only one of the things that people are questioning as part of the larger human story we are living. It's critical to deliver value and purpose. And ignoring this shift is shortsighted. The pandemic has stretched the boundaries so far that there's no returning to the old ways. People don't want to go back. Many have developed a new sense of self-awareness and worth and will remember if they have felt undervalued. The competitive job market demands companies to differentiate themselves. Bottom line: People seek purpose in their lives and career. Employees expect deeper relationships, a strong sense of community, and purpose-driven work. Your values and business purpose should be part of the fabric of the business, and, in turn, you'll see an improvement in the people you attract, you'll see morale improve, and you'll see your employees wanting to stay in your organisation for longer.
