The Small Things that Define a Fire Department's Professionalism Firefighters are known for their bravery, commitment, and the ability to respond to emergencies swiftly and effectively. While these qualities are undoubtedly crucial, there is a lesser-known aspect that can also define a fire department's professionalism and abilities. It's the attention to detail in the small things, the subtle indicators that reveal an organization's level of dedication and discipline. As a firefighter with 30 years of experience, I've come to appreciate how these seemingly insignificant elements around the fire station can reflect the true spirit of a fire department and provide excellent results.

Preventing Firefighter Disorientation: According to the United States Fire Administration 18.2% of all firefighter injuries are occur from being trapped, caught, or lost. The USFA also points out that as of 2017, only 70% of all US Fire Departments had one thermal imaging camera. This data doesn’t include the type or age of TIC in use but does point to a repeated issue faced by the fire service. The issue is known as limited visibility Many great trainings are being conducted across the United States that help prepare firefighters for this problem. However, these trainings need to be offered across the board to all and provide secondary means of orientation devices that can assist with regaining orientation when these incidents occur.
