Earlier today, I was profoundly honored to have opened the 2024 Global Black Economic Forum (GBEF) at the Essence Festival with the visionary GBEF founder Alphonso David, Emma Theofelus, the youngest woman government minister in Africa and Namibia, Oley Dibba-Wadda, Executive Director at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Presidential Center for Women and Development, the greatest Arian Simone of Fearless Fund. This event was a tapestry of inspiration, woven with the threads of visionaries and trailblazers that uplifted us all. Hearing from and conversing with pillars of the Black business community like Robert F. Smith, Melissa Bradley and Richelieu Dennis, the visionary behind Essence, (or the head intern at Essence:-), was a true honor. Their on stage insights and backstage conversation were profound and motivating. A particularly memorable moment was the meeting with the first Black woman Vice President of Republic of Colombia, Francia Márquez, and her team. Her determination to help underserved businesses thrive in her country through public and corporate contracting, and exporting was inspiring. I am delighted to be invited by her Excellency to their state event later this year to share best practices in supplier diversity with the people of Colombia. Also great occasion to chat with SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION Administrator Guzman, Acting Under Secretary of Minority Business Development Agency - U.S. Department of Commerce, Eric Morrissette, civil rights legend al Sharpton, Damon Todd Hewitt of Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Derrick Johnson of NAACP, our amazing MBEs like Corey Briscoe of ABCD & Company, and more, added layers of wisdom and perspective. I am immensely proud of the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) team’s work in organizing the Women of Color Masterclass & Brunch at the Essence Festival, in partnership with MBDA and our regional council in New Orleans Southern Region Minority Supplier Development Council. Hats off to Jetheda Hernandez, Maleeka Catron, Maureen Simonette, MPA, Nicole Hambric, CEM,and Brandi W.., and Mark Samuel for the extradinary work. Ivy McGregor of the BeyGOOD Foundation was such an inspiring speaker and an invaluable partner. K. Allen Consulting shared strategic planning principles, and Angela Dingle of Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP) provided invaluable support. Black women entrepreneurs only accounting for 13% of all MWBE revenue despite making up 45% of all NMSDC-certified of MWBEs. We need to have united and programatic approach to close the gap. My first experience at GBEF and Essence was made extraordinary by the exceptional work of Alphonso David and his team. Their dedication to economic equity and partnership were the cornerstones of this event's success. Onward! #GBEF #EssenceFestival #Leadership #EconomicEmpowerment #Inspiration #BlackBusinesses #Collaboration
