Recruiter: Candidate accepted another offer. Manager: I thought he really liked our company. Recruiter: Yes, he did Manager: I don’t understand why he would throw away a great future here. Recruiter: He is very talented. He will have a great future wherever he chooses. Manager: But we’re #1 in our space! Companies need to realize interviews are two-way streets. You are not only choosing the candidate, the candidate is choosing you as well. While you are taking 3+ months to hire someone (looking for perfection) putting candidates through multiple interviews and tests - another company recognized his worth and made his an offer far above the market range. As a hiring manager, I feel the need to share this. I have interviewed countless candidates this year and a trend I am seeing is: 1. What is on the resume is vastly overinflated to what the candidate has actually done/contributed themselves. 2. Candidates cannot concisely answer the questions! Unfortunately I have had to pass on what looked good on paper candidates due to their poor preparation and interview. If you are looking for a job, 1. Please look up the company and area you are applying to so you have some knowledge going in. 2. Please practice answering interview questions in a concise manner. Many times we only have 30 minutes. Good communication is critical to this role so show me you can state the situation, why I should care, what you did or contributed, and what was the result.

What are your plans next week? 27th/ 28th/ 29th? Those 3 days could be prime opportunity to get yourself ahead of your competition when looking for a job. As millions of people flock to the job market during the first few weeks of January, do these 3 simple things to stand out in the crowd. 1️⃣ Make sure that your LinkedIn page is up to date and makes sense for the roles you plan on applying to. The people looking through your application are time poor and will often look at your LinkedIn profile first. If it does not match up to your CV and lacks content and a narrative that makes sense for your search then you will unlikely get an interview. 2️⃣ There does not need to be a job advert for you to introduce yourself, get in there beforehand so you are first in the queue. Create a company list of businesses you would like to work for. It could be 5 or 500. Find the relevant people on their page to connect with (line manager of role, HR, department head, Talent Acquisition). Send them a note saying why you are connecting, then follow up with them once they accept your request. 3️⃣ Engage with your network, be proactive and keep going. It is a numbers game. Don't go in hot too soon, people will only engage with you if you have earnt it. Baby steps is the way, be persistent. 🚩Red flags in job adverts; a series... 1. “You thrive in a fast-paced environment!” a.k.a. “This is a high stress, high pressure, no time for error environment.” 2. “You’re someone who can wear many hats!” a.k.a. “You’ll be expected to do the jobs of 10 people.” 3. “You’ll be able to hit the ground running!” a.k.a. “We don’t have time to train you.” Coming from a Internal Recruiter who has spent a large amount of time ‘crafting the ideal’ job ad to attract ‘the best talent’ - my advice is to read between the lines... 🚩 What are they REALLY saying? Don't start your job advert with the words, we have an exciting opportunity, if: 👉 It isn't. 👉 You don't really think it is exciting. 👉 It's paying pretty much the same as twenty other jobs in the area. If you are going to advertise that it's exciting, and it really is, how are you going to back that up in your advert? And don't start a job advert with, 'a rare opportunity to join', if: 👉 You're always hiring. My clients biggest challenge when hiring...their job adverts aren't attracting the best talent in the market...want to know why? 1. Job board's don't work. None of them. They are expensive and if you are lucky then 10% of applicants MIGHT be a good fit. 2. Your role specification is outdated and doesn't articulate your culture, values and purpose. Key duties should be advertised to entice and prepare you, not to make you run! Though a job may include hundreds of different things you need to do, not everything should be counted as a key duty. Key duties are the main parts of a role, with ideally around six functions included.
