The essence of a high performing team - “I hope that when people watch us play, they see the joy that we play with, that we love playing together, and we got it done together. I feel like that’s the most important thing.” -- Jrue Holiday, Boson Celtic point guard and two-time NBA champion. This year's Celtics team is a full on education in leadership and what it means to be a high performing team. Winning the title is incredible. Even more so is the focus on 1) A talent strategy built on acquisition and on-going development 2) Building a high performing team by integrating and aligning individual mindsets and behaviors to create breadth and depth 3) Leadership and accountability throughout the organization 4) A clear vision of success and the path to attain it 5) Being resilient and learning from failure to perform differently and better 6) Motivating and inspiring each other to be their best 7) Loving what you do 8) A belief in the team over the individual. When you read what the team has to say, it's most often *we* over *i.* This article encapsulates this all so well. 🏒📈 Uniting Ice Hockey's Team Spirit with Business Success! 🏒📈 Last weekend our Ice Hockey team won the championship for the 3rd year in a row. Fast forward to Monday morning at the office, I was constantly drawing correlations between the hockey team and the teams at work. In the world of ice hockey, every player understands that success isn't individual; it's a collective endeavour. From forwards to defensemen, goalies to coaches, each member of the team contributes unique skills and strengths towards a common objective: winning the game. This spirit of collaboration, where every player supports, trusts, and relies on their teammates, is what elevates a good team to a great one. Similarly, in the realm of business, success is seldom achieved in isolation. A thriving company thrives on the cohesive efforts of its employees, managers, and leaders, all working in harmony towards a shared vision. Just as in hockey, where the sum is greater than its parts, businesses flourish when individuals collaborate effectively, pooling their talents to overcome challenges and achieve collective goals. My sons were recently selected for the 12U and 8U All-Star baseball teams, which got me thinking: Baseball shares many similarities with the way we conduct business. Team sports – and baseball in particular – teach invaluable lessons about sacrificing the desires of the individual for the greater good of the team. This concept is fundamental to any high-performing organization, whether it's in sports or business. The sacrifice of self for the betterment of the team is a cornerstone of success. A sacrifice bunt to move a runner into scoring position is a prime example. Then there's the game within the game. Each player must excel individually, whether at bat, in the field, or on the mound, to contribute to the team's overall success. Just like in business, every individual's performance impacts the whole team. My son is a pitcher, and if he excels but the fielders have an error, it affects the team's outcome. The same is true if he can’t hit the broadside of a barn with his fastball. Baseball is a mix of individual effort and collective teamwork. In business, we see the same dynamic. Individual performance is crucial for overall team success. We must support one another, work towards a common vision, communicate (I got it!), and help each other through challenges. Just as players rally around a teammate in a slump, we lift each other up in the workplace. Yesterday we celebrated the birthday of the late, great Tony Esposito. Thanks to Tony O, when I play hockey, I’m the goalie. When I play baseball, I’m the catcher (that’s thanks to Johnny Bench and Carlton Fisk). For a little perspective, I’m referring to floor hockey in high school gym class and little league baseball when I was even younger. I love sports but I was never that good at playing them. Just ask my Freshman B-team baseball coach. So why goalie and why catcher? In baseball, the catcher’s equipment set is referred to as the “tools of ignorance.” And a hockey goalie? Check out the picture. Is it some kind of self-loathing (which I don’t) or self-deprecation (which I do, too often)? I see these positions in line with my personality, having a view of the whole field of play, not seeking attention or glory (you can’t even see the goalie’s or catcher’s faces while they’re doing their work), while serving as the last line of defense, a bulwark for your team. Someone they can depend on. How about you? Whether we’re talking about sports, client presentations, stage productions, operating theaters, or debate teams, what role do you believe best suits you?
