Sumitomo Corporation (#住友商事) will begin construction of #5G base stations that can be jointly used by Japan's four major MNOs (Mobile Network Operators including NTT DoCoMo, SoftBank, KDDI au and Rakuten Mobile). Sumitomo Corporation is one of Japan's major trading houses and is famous for being an investor in #Warren_Buffett. The company previously co-managed #Jupiter_Telecom (J:COM), Japan's largest cable television MSO, with #Liberty_Media, led by Dr. John Malone. Planned base stations that support all 5G frequencies of four MNOs will be installed in areas surrounding the 2025 World Expo (#大阪万博) venue. After that, Sumitomo Corporation plans to gradually expand to other regions across the country. The CAPEX/OPEX required for 5G base stations will be reduced to about 1/4 of the cost of installing 5G base stations individually, making it possible to efficiently develop Japan's mobile communications infrastructure. Currently, MNOs spend hundreds of billions of yen each year on capital investments related to network infrastructure such as base stations. I guess that Sumitomo Corporation to merge or co-operate with J-Tower, Japan's largest tower company. This Sumitomo Corporation's challenge seems very interesting. I would like to keep an eye on this as a means of sharing mobile communication infrastructures. Furthermore, the question remains as to what the role of MNOs will be in the future.
