It is the dream of parents, students, and teachers everywhere to have a high quality system where learners are free to explore their interests and shape into strong, productive, and moral men and women. This has been enhanced, and in some cases exacerbated, by many layers of federal, state, and local policies that are in place throughout our nation. In the UK, the Department of Education says it will focus on « a rich curriculum with a strong foundation in reading, writing and maths. » I would love to see #numeracy replace the word #maths. Why? - maths is part of numeracy, but numeracy includes the role numbers play in our daily lives. - numeracy involves reasoning and applying simple numerical concepts in everyday life - numbers play a huge role in everything we do and in the world. We need to know how to decipher and understand numbers as well as we do words - managing money, creating a budget, learning about compound interest and mortgages, will empower people to take agency over their finances. While maths is important, especially in an AI world, I think knowing how to put a few $/mth into the stock market when you’re 18 will do more for an individual than learning Calculus. In my research for my book on #AIliteracy, I came across #Alberta’s Department of Education work on numeracy. Its the most comprehensive breakdown of numeracy in formal education that I have found.
