The Wall Street Journal published an article, this week, titled "Quantum Computing Gets Real: It Could Even Shorten Your Airport Connection." It seems we have already begun moving into what may come to be known as The Age of Quantum Computing. The article shines a spotlight on my favorite quantum computer company, D-Wave. Here are a few of the exciting surprises from their article. * D-Wave is a leader in the commercialization of quantum computing. * D-Wave customers have used its annealing quantum computing technology to solve optimization problems in many types of small and large enterprises, such as retail delivery scheduling, tour routing, and cargo-handling at one of America's busiest ports. *D-Wave's Advantage(TM) quantum computer is, currently, the world's largest quantum computer (5,000+ qubits). *D-Wave's Leap(TM) real-time quantum cloud service enables its customers to accelerate the adoption and deployment of quantum and hybrid-quantum applications. *WSJ's prescient article projected light on D-Wave's technological strengths in tackling real-world optimization problems of industry - not just in the future, but today.  * D-Wave's recent technological advances are enabling businesses and researchers to explore quantum computing for specific, current problems; its systems facilitate resolutions of problematic, daily operations. * D-Wave is the only company commercially offering annealing quantum computing; a type of quantum computing that can solve today's optimization problems, that are time-consuming headaches to commercial enterprises.  *Dr. Alan Baratz, CEO of D-Wave, said their customers are demonstrating "a steadily increasing appetite and enthusiasm to harness the power of quantum to solve their most computationally complex problems." Apparently, the Wall Street Journal agrees. D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) is a leader in quantum computing systems, software, and services and the world's first commercial supplier of quantum computers.

Breaking my long LinkedIn silence to say I totally called it. Back in November I wrote a story about the government buying a quantum computer from US-based company PsiQuantum. https://lnkd.in/gEHdV3Qc Today I woke up to find the official announcement being splashed around the news I first heard about the deal from a local quantum industry insider who was concerned that, by buying from an US-based company, the government would signal a lack of confidence in Australian firm to deliver a functional, fault-tolerant quantum computing system. Why not run a competitive tender process that might allow for a consortium of locals to put this project together, the insider asked. Why all the secrecy? Another source claimed PsiQuantum had successfully sold their product to the government using lobbyists (this detail didn't make the final edit). It seems that, rather than taking Australians along for a curiosity-inspired project to build a strange piece of emerging tech, the government is tossing $1 billion at a shiny sales pitch. We're a nation of rubes. No one besides Simon Devitt was willing to go on the record for this story, calling the then-rumoured investment in unproven technology "a ludicrous waste of money". Information Age's subscribers were first learn about the quantum computing deal thanks to managing editor Roulla Yiacoumi's willingness to take a risk on a story, based on whispers, that the government wanted to tell on its own terms. Kudos to Justin Hendry who's done excellent work with InnovationAus to uncover more about the secretive process behind today's announcement.

2023 saw great progress in quantum computing - faster than many expected. Listening to experts from all major cloud providers and leading universities at a symposium in Berkeley about the practical challenges & opportunities left me excited....another step towards bringing QC to practical problem solving. "The governments of Australia and the state of Queensland this week committed A$940mn (US$620mn) between them to back the construction of a full-scale quantum computer near Brisbane by US start-up PsiQuantum. The deal was just the latest sign that a decades-old dream of a new form of computing that takes advantage of the unusual properties of quantum mechanics may finally be coming to fruition." Can we anticipate when the first useful quantum computations will be realized? Towards this, how should researchers model the capabilities of these devices that will continually improve from today's NISQ era to the future fault-tolerant era? These questions are timely in light of recent advances in quantum hardware, error correction, algorithms, and applications. This talk addresses these questions and the transition from NISQ to EFTQC from the perspective of quantum resource estimation. We introduce a simple model, a tool for quantum resource estimation, to characterize early fault-tolerant quantum computing (EFTQC) architectures. With this we demonstrate how recent "EFTQC algorithms" help these systems tackle bigger problems, pulling useful quantum computing closer to the present. Should you start exploring quantum computing? Yes, said a panel of analysts convened at Tabor Communications HPC and AI on Wall Street conference earlier this year. Without doubt, the quantum computing landscape remains murky. Yet in the past ~5 years virtually every aspect of quantum computing has raced forward. At least one 1000-plus-qubit system is edging towards user access now and another is expected by year-end. There’s been a proliferation of software offerings up and down the “quantum stack” though it’s hardly complete. Most promising, what were a few POC use-case explorations has mushroomed into very many efforts across many sectors. The best reason to proceed, perhaps, is there’s little choice. The roaring geopolitical rivalry around getting to practical quantum computing fast – which includes robust spending from the U.S., the U.K., the EU, and China, as examples – is concrete evidence.

Today, we released a three-year roadmap for our Quantum Error Correction Stack, Deltaflow, starting in 2024 and culminating in a system where quantum computers can run one million error-free quantum operations by 2026.     Quantum computing is currently at a crucial inflection point. The industry is experiencing a rapid acceleration of innovation, largely driven by the shift from the first successful generation of noisy intermediate-scale (NISQ) quantum computers to the development of a new generation of error-corrected quantum computers.     As a result, the industry has started to coalesce around the idea that 2035 could be the year we achieve fully fault-tolerant computing and begin unlocking a range of transformative applications that open a new age of human progress.     But we still need to hit some critical milestones along the way. At Riverlane, we believe the next major one is a ‘MegaQuOp’ quantum computer, i.e. a quantum computer that can perform one million error-free quantum operations.     We are building Deltaflow to help quantum computing companies working with every major qubit type reach this goal, and our roadmap reveals how we plan to achieve it.    It won’t be easy and will require some significant technical breakthroughs along the way, but we’re ready to step up to the challenge in commitment to our mission of making quantum computing useful sooner.        For all the details, you can read our blog published by Maria Maragkou and Earl Campbell here: https://lnkd.in/ge7gcrx7
