Celebrating Circular Economy Milestones in Brazil and Scotland! We're witnessing strides towards sustainability and a circular economy in two different parts of the world. 🇧🇷 Brazil's National Circular Economy Strategy (ENEC): President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has signed yesterday a decree to implement the National Circular Economy Strategy (ENEC), transitioning from a linear to a circular economic model. This strategy emphasizes the circular redesign of production to eliminate waste, reduce pollution, and regenerate natural ecosystems. According to Luisa Santiago of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, this initiative is a testament to Brazil’s commitment to sustainable, resilient economic development. It aims to integrate workers from various sectors into the circular economy, enhancing resource productivity and fostering job creation. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Scotland's Circular Economy Bill: Scotland has passed the Circular Economy Bill, equipping Ministers and local authorities with tools to increase reuse and recycling rates and modernise waste management services. This legislation includes setting local recycling targets, restricting the disposal of unsold goods, placing charges on single-use items, and empowering authorities to tackle littering. Minister for Climate Action Gillian Martin highlights the potential for job creation and greenhouse gas emission reduction through these measures, paving the way for a more sustainable future. The Global Commitment 2023 Progress Report just came out, clearly showing the limitations of voluntary measures to tackle #PlasticPollution. Led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF) in collaboration with UNEP, the Global Commitment is the biggest voluntary initiative on the topic. Such voluntary mesures are a part of the puzzle only if it reinforces and complements ambitious policies and regulations. Over the past five years, business signatories have significantly outperformed their peers when it comes to taking positive action to tackle plastic waste: 1. They substantially reduced their use of several problematic and avoidable plastic items, stabilised their use of virgin plastics, and more than doubled their share of recycled content. 2. By increasing their use of recycled plastics by 1.5 million tonnes per annum, signatories are leaving the equivalent of a barrel of oil in the ground every two seconds – as well as avoiding 2.5 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. However, with a large part of industry not yet taking action, and business signatories likely to miss key 2025 goals, the world is not on course to eliminating plastic waste and pollution, the publication highlights. EMF predicts 20 trillion flexible packaging items will end up in the ocean by 2040 unless there is more ambitious binding policy and regulatory measures combined with greater business action.
