Phasing out #fossilfuels is paramount for #climatechange mitigation as these sources are the primary contributors to the elevated levels of #greenhousegasemissions, particularly carbon dioxide, that drive global warming. The combustion of fossil fuels releases vast amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere, intensifying the greenhouse effect and leading to unprecedented changes in the Earth's climate. Limiting the use of fossil fuels and transitioning to cleaner, renewable energy sources is essential to reduce the concentration of greenhouse gases, mitigate the warming of the planet, and alleviate the severe consequences of climate change, including extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and disruptions to ecosystems. This transition is a fundamental step in achieving international climate goals set forth in the Paris Agreement, and it is expected that discussions at #COP28 will focus on accelerating the transition from coal, oil and gas toward clean energy sources.

New research published in Nature Climate Change concludes that for a 50% chance of warming within 1.5°C we need to reach net-zero by 2035. The impacts of #climatechange, are now manifesting and wreaking havoc in every corner of the planet, at the same time, fossil-fuel-derived CO2 emissions reached a record high in 2022. It is therefore worrying that governments, in aggregate, still plan to produce more than double the amount of fossil fuels in 2030 than what would be consistent with limiting global warming to 1.5°C. To be specific, government plans and projections would lead to an increase in global coal production until 2030, and in global oil and gas production until at least 2050. This conflicts with government commitments under the Paris Agreement, and clashes with expectations that global demand for coal, oil, and gas will peak within this decade even without new policies. I urge all sector players to combine targets and policies to actively phase out fossil fuel production with #climate mitigation and just transition measures — such as reducing fossil fuel consumption, expanding #renewableenergy, and targeting investments and social protection for affected communities. This can reduce the costs of decarbonization, promote policy coherence, and ensure that #renewables replace fossil fuel #energy. Nearly 200 parties signed the Paris Agreement in December 2015, aiming to limit global warming to well below 2 °C, while pursuing efforts to limit the increase to 1.5 °C—a target that requires achieving worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emission neutrality by no later than 2050.8 But #decarbonizing the global economy likely cannot happen without technological change, both on the energy supply side—via the large-scale development of #renewables and end-use shift toward #low-carbon energy carriers. While #electrification is central to much of the shift, decarbonizing hardto-abate sectors may require solutions beyond electrification. Clean #hydrogen could prove as one of the key elements of decarbonization, helping to overcome the limits of electrification to decarbonize sectors such as industry or heavy-duty transport.

This statement by Dr. Mathieu Lucquiaud in his climate change course resonated with me deeply throughout the week: "If the end goal is addressing global warming, then our primary focus should be on reducing CO2 emissions, rather than solely relying on renewable energy." This statement holds absolute truth. It is crucial for governments, policymakers, engineers, and energy producers to come together and fully comprehend the essence of combating climate change. The objective is not merely to replace existing energy sources with renewables but to effectively mitigate emissions and stay within our carbon budget. Stockholm: Despite 151 national governments having pledged to achieve net-zero emission, governments plan to produce around 110% more fossil fuels in 2030 than would be consistent with limiting warming to 1.5°Celcius, and 69% more than what would be consistent with 2°C. #Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, has a significant, albeit different, impact on the planet compared to #CO2. It has a higher Global Warming Potential, a shorter atmospheric lifetime, and its major sources include agriculture, waste management, and fossil fuel production.
