💡 This Thursday, DSO Entity hosted the workshop ‘PCIs for DSOs – good practices and potential barriers’, with the participation of DG ENER, E.ON and the support of CEDEC- European Federation of Local & Regional Energy Companies, E.DSO, Eurelectric and GEODE - The voice of local energy distributors across Europe.    The workshop tackled some issues pointed out in the #GridActionPlan: the lack of information about funding opportunities for DSOs and the scarce visibility of the EU-funding programs in this field.    🔌The event has been an occasion for DSO Entity’s members & stakeholders to learn about the European Commission’s approach to #PCIprojects.     Here the three main takeaways of the workshop:     1️⃣   The EU flagships infrastructure projects receive high political awareness, which results in access to special financing sources such as the #ConnectingEuropeFacility (CEF), among other advantages.     2️⃣ #CEFs are not the only European funding sources. Indeed, some projects could benefit from other #EuropeanFunding programs.    3️⃣   #DSOs applying for PCI status should ensure their projects meet the criteria and build a unified team within their consortium.     Furthermore, participants had the opportunity to hear about the #GabretaProject, a successful and concrete #PCI and #CEF funded project aimed at accelerating the #digitisation of the #distributiongrid by fostering the cross-border cooperation between Germany and the Czech Republic.    It was a great occasion for all to share experiences while applying for funds and #PCIs, creating a process of mutual learning.    🗨️ This workshop was organized and run by our TF FIN. ASEAN Interconnector Study: Taking a regional approach to decarbonization Summary: The ASEAN Interconnector Study conducted by DNV highlights the significant financial and environmental benefits of regional cooperation in decarbonizing the power sector across the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN). By 2050, adopting a coordinated approach involving cross-border power interconnectors, hydrogen networks, and enhanced energy storage infrastructure could yield savings of up to $800 billion. Key Points: Economic Benefits: Overall Savings: Collaborative efforts could reduce the net present cost of decarbonization by approximately $800 billion compared to individual efforts, representing an 11% cost reduction. Comparison with Moderate Interconnection: The regional cooperation scenario is projected to save $300 billion more than the moderate interconnection scenario, which itself provides substantial savings with limited infrastructure needs. Strategic Approaches: Individual Approach: Countries attempt decarbonization independently using their own resources, leading to varied success and higher costs. Moderate Interconnection: Involves several cross-border power interconnectors based on the ASEAN RE Target Case, offering significant cost savings though limited in scope without a hydrogen network. Regional Cooperation: Envisions a fully integrated approach with unrestricted resource sharing across countries, maximizing the utilization of regional renewable resources and storage solutions. Advantages of Regional Cooperation: Resource Optimization: By sharing resources, ASEAN countries can minimize the amounts of renewable generation and storage needed to achieve net zero, optimizing material resources and reducing the spatial footprint required for infrastructure. Speed of Transition: Increased collaboration can accelerate the transition to renewable energy, lowering costs for consumers and mitigating environmental impact. The ASEAN Interconnector Study underscores the critical role of regional cooperation in achieving cost-effective and sustainable energy solutions. 🌍 Looking ahead to 2024, a crucial year for the EU and the world, UPEI, the voice of Europe’s independent fuel suppliers, addresses the decarbonisation challenges posed to the global energy system with:   ✅ a new President, Johan Deleu, and two new Vice Presidents, Erik de Vries, and Ondrej Jancarik, elected for a three-year mandate, who will serve alongside UPEI Vice Presidents, Christian Heise, and Carsten Mueller,   ✅ and the launching of a new Commission on Energy Transition.    🌱 🌐 the commission will develop policy and position papers for energy transition policymakers and key players, and other tools or set of actions for our members, including webinars. More generally, the Energy Transition commission will provide support to actively progress towards a net-zero economy in 2050 and embrace new sustainable energy solutions.
