Asking my #highered colleagues, particularly those with #admissions expertise: What is the difference between restrictive early action decision (REA) and single-choice early action decision (SEA)? I have found several references equating REA and SEA, including Yale's admissions site, which says, "Applicants who would like an admissions decision by mid-December may apply through Yale’s Single-Choice Early Action program (also known as Restrictive Early Action)." Yet, Ivy Coach distinguishes between REA and SEA, suggesting that the single-choice early action is a more limiting subset of restrictive early action, and cites Yale as an example of a school offering SEA (even though Yale's site says REA and SEA are the same thing). Thank you to all the Alice Smith parents who came to my recent presentation called ‘How to get into Yale…and other questions you are not supposed to ask’. It was a pleasure to speak to so many parents at an event about university planning held at our primary school campus. There is often a stereotype in place of the pushy and unrealistic international school parent, demanding that their children have to get into the most well known universities in the world. In my experience, this is quite rare and most parents are often quite shy when it comes to asking questions about university admissions or are often just interested in how different systems work. It is also true that international school parents often need to plan much further ahead. They could be making decisions based on working in multiple countries and thinking about how international qualifications will relate back to their home country. For these reasons, I want to encourage parents to come and talk to me and my HE and Careers team regardless of the age of their children or the level of knowledge they have about the sector. If asking about places they know the names of like Yale or Oxford engages them in a more nuanced discussion about HE and Careers, then this can only be a positive thing.

Intriguing questions in this article about ways to shorten the amount of time it takes to complete a degree, while still maintaining the integrity of academic programs. Time and money are real barriers to education for many students, and this is a prime area for higher ed to rethink some of its traditions and assumptions. (Also, great to see Chancellor Lori J. Sarah Igo, Andrew Jackson Chair in American History at Vanderbilt University and Cornerstone faculty member, recently joined GBH's College Uncovered to talk about the experience of reimagining general education at Vanderbilt. "We didn't actually have an idea of what general education was, or what it should be—we didn't actually have a vocabulary for it. And so our first effort was to figure out, for students in the 21st century, what is a meaningful liberal arts education? How do we help them see that value, how do we help our own faculty articulate what that is, and what does that mean for how we need to reform how we're doing things? It doesn't need to be a canon... doesn't need to be an older model of a foundation or a core, but students would actually really benefit from faculty designing a program, especially in the first year, that all students take in common. Give them a chance to understand the richness and breadth or a liberal education, read something from philosophy, read something from economics, read something from neuroscience, that are circling around the same questions—that's how our new curriculum is designed—and mentor them in small groups where the idea is to think big... but also to learn how to read and write in ways that will serve them well for the rest of their college career and beyond." This afternoon, we kicked off this project with the strategic planning committee, and I'm reminded once again why I do what I do. Often strategic planning is an activity unfairly pegged as the less glamorous side of our roles. Some see it as busy work, destined to gather dust on a shelf. Yet, what happened today was anything but. Within one 90-minute meeting, this team of people went from general introductions to diving straight into critiquing peer and aspirant plans. This kind of critical engagement turns the usual 'strategic plan on a shelf' into something living, something actionable. I'm also incredibly excited to work closely with Maureen Cochran and Clare Creighton as the co-chairs for this effort. Their critical inquiry in the discussions leading up to this kickoff wasn't just about doing what has always been done but thinking about co-creating a true vision for the division. This process isn't about coming to the table with answers, but asking the right questions and that's exactly what they do! I'm genuinely excited to see where their leadership will take us throughout this journey. #StrategicPlanning #Leadership #HigherEducation #Innovation
