With the war on terror more or less completed (with exception to the advisory forces in Iraq and parts of Syria), service members with serious injury will be front and center in debates about long term quality of life and healthcare treatment. For my first Medium post, I discuss a research study I ran a couple years about how we measure quality of life in post 9/11 combat veterans with combat injuries that impact mobility (i.e. lower extremity injuries like amputation and musculoskeletal injury). I also discuss how this information can be better used by policymakers and leaders to create new programs and interventions that better serve this cohort, and those like them. #writing #military #veteran #disability #amputation #injury #leg #spine #research

Armed Forces Act 2021: background, implications for councils. All councils have voluntarily signed the Armed Forces Covenant. The further enshrinement of the Covenant into law is an opportunity to build upon work Public Sector organisations are already leading to help serving personnel, reservists, veterans, and their families to have the same equality of access to public services as their civilian neighbours. The Armed Forces Act 2021 further enshrines the Armed Forces Covenant into law to help prevent service personnel and veterans being disadvantaged when accessing public services. Clause 8 amends Part 16A of the Armed Forces Act 2006 to introduce a duty to have due regard to the principles of the Armed Forces Covenant, as follows: • the unique obligations of, and sacrifices made by, the armed forces. • the principle that it is desirable to remove disadvantages arising for service people from membership, or former membership, of the armed forces. • the principle that special provision for service people may be justified by the effects on such people of membership, or former membership, of the armed forces. Transition stress and boundaries. The difference between how the armed forces/first responders operate and the civilian workplace. In the armed forces and first responders community you have a duty to yourself and others around you much more so than civilian counterparts. When leaving there is an adjustment period where it can be difficult to understand where the civilian colleague is coming from as they can say "I have finished, I am off home" this concept can be alien to the uniformed service leaver they can see it as being "Jack" and not completing the task.
