What I learnt from my first-ever internship experience! Recently, I completed my first internship at the Sambhavam Center for Autism for a period of 39 days. During the span of 39 days, I observed 5 clients and prepared learning material for interventions. 📌Bridging the Gap from Student to Professional: Transitioning from a college environment to a professional setting was a whole new experience. The shift from attending lectures and assignments to working for employers and clients was significant. As a student, the entire system is rigged in your favour (though it may not feel like it), but in a professional setting, it is all about delivering results for others. 📌Practical Spectacle: Internships aren’t just a box to check; they’re a bridge between theoretical learning and real-world application. Witnessing classroom concepts in action gave me insights I couldn’t have gained otherwise 🧐 I observed how structured and organised a therapy setting actually is than what is shown by mainstream media. And made notes on the ease with which therapists approach different clients and their needs, which comes with experience, of course! 📌Networking and Opportunity hub! Engaging with professionals and management at the center opened doors to a world of opportunities and resources. It’s incredible how exposure to different perspectives opens you to the scope of the field. Interacting with therapists and my co-interns during lunch time about their experiences gave me a first-hand view into what the future holds. 📌Choose wisely! Internships are YOUR chance to grow. Handpick one that aligns with your passion, and the hands-on exposure will accelerate your learning journey. As for my time at Sambhavam, I would like to express my gratitude towards all the therapists, supervisors and fellow interns for making my experience truly knowledgeable and memorable. The supportive and collaborative environment at the centre helped foster such a positive environment. I would like to especially thank Miftah Anjum for the support, training and guidance she provided me with. My internship experience at Sambhavam has kindled a deep interest in Applied Behavioral Analysis. What skills am I hoping to gain/see or improve from my internship? I am hoping to gain a lot of childcare skills and provider skills. I would love to learn the best ways to approach a situation and learn the best ways to avoid conflict. Being a Preschool Aid you need to have a lot of patience, I have seen a lot of improvement in my patience skills. At the start already I was a very open-minded patient person but as the class has gone on I've seen much improvement. 🎉 I recently completed a 200-hour internship journey at the Institute for Exceptional Children. 🌟 Reflecting on this enriching experience fills me with immense gratitude for the invaluable insights gained and the wonderful individuals I've had the pleasure to meet and learn from during my time here. Here are some of the many key takeaways from my internship: 1. Children coming in with anger issues are, more often than not, not aware of the presence of any other feelings as they are constantly shamed for their expression of anger, with anger itself. It is important to make them realize and acknowledge other feelings as there is already enough focus on this particular emotion. 2. (An obvious point but) Working with children requires a great amount of patience. Whether it is working with a child who does not stop talking or a child who refuses to speak. The more space you provide the child, the more there are opportunities for growth. 3. It is very important to have strong clinical impressions while working with children, especially when it comes to analyzing the results of psycholometric assessments. There are many factors that play a role while a child is made to take an assessment, and keeping them in mind and your own clinical impression will help in accurately interpreting and understanding the findings from the assessments. Thank you, Institute for Exceptional Children, for this transformative experience. Here's to carrying forward these lessons as I continue on my journey as a trainee psychologist. 🌱

Look no further than The Frist Center for Autism and Innovation | Vanderbilt University! I had the pleasure of touring the Frist Center while at #Vanderbilt for the College #Autism Summit in October, thanks to Dr. Dave Caudel. From the website: The Frist Center is excited to announce applications are now open for our Autism Summer Internship Program. The program is open to #undergraduate students who identify as #neurodiverse (either through formal or self-diagnosis). Through this internship, successful applicants will undergo a STEM project with a faculty mentor, under the guidance of the Frist Center for Autism and Innovation. This year our program will take place between May 27th – August 2nd, in person on the Vanderbilt University Campus. Interested undergraduates should apply at this Google Form by the closing date of 11:59pm CT on February 14th. We look forward to welcoming our summer cohort in May! This internship will focus primarily on science and engineering (STEM) related projects. Many neurodivergent folks are undiagnosed - we understand this and ask that you do not let lack of a formal diagnosis keep you from applying. We are thrilled to announce our newest therapeutic program, Sensory Strategies for Teens to Adults (SST2T)! Most of the current sensory support targets younger children to improve developmental skills via a play based model. We developed this program in response to the many requests for teenagers, young adults, and even parents who struggle with sensory challenges in their functional environments. From The Journal of Child Life: Psychosocial Theory and Practice Child Life Internship Readiness: Perspectives of Child Life Training Coordinators and Supervisors "Certified Child Life Specialists serve an important role in the pediatric healthcare system providing psychosocial care for children and their families. While the child life profession continues to grow, the student-to-professional pipeline has not been researched. This mixed-methods study focuses on internship readiness from the clinical internship coordinators’ and supervisors’ perspectives to understand the child life intern selection process. Results indicate there are criteria that qualify and disqualify child life interns related to the internship candidates’ knowledge, skills, and abilities. Implications for this research include areas to improve access and decrease potential bias in the internship selection process as well as future research related to child life training."
