How are settlement fail fees impacting bond and bill trades in Canada's financial markets?
In early 2023, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced an industry shift from a trade date plus two days (T+2) to a trade date plus one day (T+1) settlement cycle to be implemented on May 28, 2024 for U.S. cash equities, corporate debt and unit investment trusts. In Canada, the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) and the Canadian Capital Markets Association (CCMA) are spearheading the effort to ensure the Canadian market remains aligned to the United States and the implementation date has been set to May 27, 2024.
