Why would I still post about an event that was almost 3 weeks ago? 53 pages of notes, probably twice that in photos. 10’s of new connections. Where do you start? Do people still care what you write about an event weeks after it concludes? Do we post for others or ourselves? I decided I was still curious about the things I saw, heard, and thought about, so I should still share them with you all. Here's 3 topics I was able to listen to that have left me curious 3 weeks after the show has ended. 1.“Diversity for Air and Space Innovation” The Honourable Barbara Barrett, Former Secretary of the US Airforce. Firstly, this title does not do any justice to the achievements of Barbara Barrett. It left me questioning why I had not heard of her previously. Her address was insightful and engaging, but it was the phrase “Not since… a woman..” that left me captivated. Throughout history, and the history of ‘modern warfare’, women have been at the forefront of solving problems. Problems that presented themselves in a man's world. The invention of Kevlar, the mathematics of getting to the moon, the engineering of GPS, the creation of liquid fuel rockets. Women have, and continue to propel society forward. 2.Masterfully moderated by Amy Hopkins, Elizabeth Seward, Morena Bernardini and Seyed Sajjadi discussed “The Potential for Defense and Space Interoperability” Key points and takeaways: a.There is a transparency with Space. It is a powerful domain and can harm political ambitions and have international relations implications. b.The data from space is pure, space deliver the truth c.“It takes the invisible and makes it visible” d.Challenges identified by the panel broadly fell into 4 buckets: Legal (eg. Mining of the moon), Technology (TTP, Protocol, Data exchange), Operations (the debris, the traffic), and Public Opinion (use of Starlink in Ukraine) 3.BAE Systems and Project OdySSEy presentation left me so curious I couldn’t stop speaking about it and dragged Isabella Baldwin to BAEs stand to give it a try. Sir Stuart Atha KBE CB DSO achieved the unachievable and presented technical content in the most engaging manner, the chat we had later that day at the stand was even better. Presenting on the intersection between training and (force) readiness, I particularly enjoyed the comment that “training in the real world is now too compromising” and that the deterrence is about doctrine, tactics and politics. The presentation also posed several key questions: a.What does competent and current mean in modern training? b.With technology now being ahead of our concepts, how do we play catchup? c.How can we use simulations to make situations realistic. How can we introduce civilian responses in an organic way (how do we simulate and account for mass crowds mobbing a plane crash site following a social media tweet?)
